I tried to upload a zipped movie clip direct ot the forum page. Previously I have uploaded similar clips without a problem, the clip size was under 6MB. Is there now a size limit???:(

This happened recently with a PDF doc.

Hi Eric,

You mean "the Forum" refused your clip? PTE didn't refuse your clip - just clarity for the record....

Best regards,

Lin

Who put a thistle under your saddle then? If you want to be pedantic, PTE's forum skipped the clip because it was over the upload limit, see the attached screen shot. A simple answer would have sufficed instead of a put down.

The reason I deleted my original reply was when I made the attached screen shot I downloaded the latest forum upload programme which has text advising the upload limit, which the old system didn't, it just sat there doing nothing making one wonder "is it me".

Eric,

The forum has a limit at 6 MB.

Please upload to Dropbox, Google Drive or Mediafire.

Hi Igor

As I said in my first post, the clip is under 6MB, see my attached screen shot.

Hi Eric,You're interpreting my response improperly. This entire post belongs in the "off-topic" section because it is not about PTE at all, it's a question about forum software.

There is and was no "put down" implied or intended. You appear overly sensitive. Many of our forum participants are non-native English speakers. It helps to be very clear or we contribute toward confusion.

Best regards,

Lin

When you upload a file the data is sent in packets of typically 1500 bytes, with header, numbering, and address information added. These additions have probably taken your file to >6MB. A 9% increase will take you over 6MB, and some transmission protocols can add up to 30% to a file.

Hi Colin

I regularly post screen shot shots & PDF files to illustrate what I'm talking about. (see my motto "a picture is worth a thousand words"). After reading the fine print on the screen shot of the refusal of the upload, the limit is actually 3.13MB per item posted, up to a limit of 6? MB which in this day & age of ever increasing file sizes is miserly, & can only downgrade our explanation of complex points, especially to none English speakers who are better able to understand a picture.:(

back in 2002 i posted this when i had a problem emailing a small show

Subject: RE: Mail System Error - Returned Mail

Hello,

My name is Tim.

Mail servers are specifically designed to transmit text messages; similar

to

electronic 'postcards', or letters. Sending large email attachments

congests

data traffic, and delays delivery to ALL accounts on the server.

Email is encrypted 'before' passing through the outgoing mail server, and

decrypted 'after' passing through the receiving mail server. This

encryption process can increase file size by 30% or more, depending on the

file format.

The 'shaw.ca' mail server can process files up to five (5) megabytes

(Total)

in size. However, this includes the size of the outgoing file after

encryption.

Though larger files occasionally get through, the recommended setting

guarantees safe passage through our mail server. Remember that receiving

mail servers, especially dial-up connection mail servers, may have further

size restrictions to as low as 1 or 2 megabytes; in which case the message

and attachment will be rejected and returned to you.

Alternatively, most email programs will allow you to 'break' the message

into smaller pieces to send it. Please see the programs help files for

assistance with this.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

For years the Internet has used FTP 'File Transfer Protocol', to transport

large files across. FTP transfers files of any size, from one Internet

connected computer to another, and is the standard used to move 'Internet

Freight' (Large Files). Just do a search on 'FTP', as there are 'free'

and

'shareware' FTP programs, as well as 'packaged' software that can be

purchased.

Our first priority is to ensure that shaw.ca mail servers are available

continuously, and we encourage you to consider file transfer options that

directly meet the need.

Please feel free to contact us, the local phone number for technical

support

can be found at http://support.shaw.ca/contacts.htm or visit our Customer

Support Site at http://support.shaw.ca.

Thank you for choosing Shaw.

When sending a reply to us, please remember to include all previous

correspondence.

The size limit per email is 5 MB uncompressed. Because most files have

some

sort of compression, the actual file size is generally 3-4 MB allowable.

We

also have a storage limit of 10 MB of total space on our servers. If

someone sends you a 2 MB email, but you only have 1.5 MB available, the

message will be returned as well.

I use a Yachting forum that gets around 250 posts per day. Their system, each registered user gets an allocation of total file size. If your attachments exceeds your allocated upload total, this flags up your upload page history, with the option to delete some of your current historic total. When I first started using it I thought it was a waste of time because of the deletion of possibly valuable information. However, now I've been using it a couple of months I've accepted it. I'm not saying it's a better system the PTE's forum, but to jump from virtually limitless uploads to such a miserly amount is a retrograde step.

Ken, my BT email service allows attachments up to 25mb, but I don't see that as a comparison, you get what you pay for.

Eric,

Sorry, I was wrong about size limit for uploads.

It's 3.13 MB for a member now.

If we allow to upload larger files it will vastly complicate creating of forum backups. The forum is already 1.5 GB.

Probably we can launch a separate service for uploads?
