Object select is difficult to see

I find that the older I get the harder it is to detect selected objects on the screen. I think this problem should not be hard to fix. If I select the object using the layer text in lower right corner of screen the selected text has blue background. If I select the object by clicking on the object on the screen the selected text in the layer text winder in lower right corner of screen has light gray background and I am not sure which object is selected. I would prefer the blue background on both selection methods.
