About Easel Painting With PicturesToExe

So there are a number of ways to use PicturesToExe to paint an image on a canvas on an easel or just paint an image on the screen. Most of these methods require a bit of help from other software so I’ll discuss the major ways to accomplish this and also whether or not a “style” can be made to help share this creation with other users who may not yet have developed the necessary skill set to do it all on their own.

1. Video Masking

The simple way to create a video mask for PTE is to use a product such as PhotoShop which allows painting with a pure white color on a pure black background. To have an active, live, video mask, you will need to use a screen video capture software to capture your process and save it as a video. There are several good software packages such as the freeware Srecorder or one of the very good and relatively inexpensive packages such as Bandicam.

So open Photoshop, create a “new” file using the color black and choose the appropriate aspect ratio such as 4:3, 5:4, 2:3 or 16:9 depending on which you wish to make into a style. Choose a brush in an appropriate size and density and begin your recording and “paint” the screen with pure white in brush strokes beginning and ending as you would were you painting a scene with a real brush and easel. When you are finished, stop the recording and save the video.

When this video is used as a video mask in PTE with any image as the mask content, the image will be revealed one brush stroke at a time. You can also use PhotoShop or a similar photo editing software to create your easel and canvas as PNG files so that the video mask can be fitted exactly to the area of the canvas. I have several free styles which create the easel and canvas and allow the user to move and/or size the easel and canvas and paint their image as they wish.

The downside of using a video mask is that you really can’t easily use a paintbrush or hand holding a brush because it’s very, very difficult to synchronize the movement of the brush or brush in hand to the paintbrush motion in the Photoshop video. If the brush or brush and hand are part of the actually video, the problem is that they will be translucent and the viewer will be able to see through the brush or brush and hand so this video masking technique is not ideally suited for showing a brush in your painting.

The video mask concept is very amenable to creating styles. I have a few created which will be available for download. Without the constraint of having a brush or a hand with a brush, it's a simple step to create styles for any aspect ratio painting.

2 VisiSketch Pro or other software

David Fitzpatrick created a very nice program called VisiSketch and later VisiSketch Pro which allow the user to copy paint on a 640x480 pixel platform using a brush, pen, crayon, etc., The way the program works is the user chooses a background and a foreground. The background can be a real photo or a canvas and have texture or not. The user sees the foreground and chooses whether to use a pen, brush, hand holding a brush, inkjet, crayon, etc., to trace the outline of the visible image using a small line. Then once the outline is drawn by placing “dots” along the outline, a larger width line is used to “paint” everything eventually black so that the entire foreground appears black. The software creates a “bitmap” bmp file and from this creates one or two uncompressed AVI files which PTE can’t use directly. The user then uses a video editing program (I use the freeware VideoPad Video Editor) to convert these huge uncompressed AVI files to something such as wmv files which PTE can use. Then when played in PTE you see your creation painted on a canvas. This WMV file or MP4 or whatever the user has converted to, can then be mapped to a canvas on an easel, etc.

Now the fun part is creating an image where a pallet of paint can set next to the easel and the paintbrush moved to the pallet and back to the canvas until the painting is finished. How to do this? I had to figure it out for myself because David’s program no longer has links to video tutorials. After lengthy experimentation I discovered the ways to do this and I’ll make tutorials to help show you how. But this is the basic way you proceed. Since the entire program uses a 640x480 pallet, the easel and paint pallet must fit inside this parameter. So if you want for example to have your easel appear on a full 1920x1080 16:9 image, you must first create the background image with the PNG easel and paint pallet as part of the original image within a 640x480 pixel portion of that background image. I’ve found the easiest way is to create a duplicate of the original background image and put my PNG pallet and easel on it within a 640x480 pixel parameter. I do this by using PhotoShop to crop a 640x480 section to see where to place the PNG objects. Then once you have this determined, place your easel and palled within this parameter. Crop another 640x480 from this and size what you want to appear on the easel canvas and use Free Transform to size it to fit perfectly on the canvas on the easel. Save this 640x480 as your foreground and the 640x480 portion with the blank canvas as the background. When you finish everything in VisiSketch Pro you then use the full 1920x1080 image in PTE and fit your video seamlessly over it. Any adjustment to color, tone, brightness to make a seamless match can be done in PTE and with appropriate masking so that it appear you are painting directly on the background. You can then put the entire background and video as the child of a frame if you want to enlarge and display the painting at the end of your show.

So to reiterate. To have the paintbrush actually move off the canvas to the pallet and back you need to have a 640x480 background image with the easel, canvas and paint pallet and a perfect duplicate of this for the foreground with the canvas painted. This type painting is not really amenable to a style because each image is different and the bitmap bmp file to create a sketch is different in each case. Many additional things are possible though with this concept such as animation via gif, snow, rain, lightning, etc., all can be added to the background independent of the 640x480 portion for the painting itself. I believe there is lots of potential for those of you who are creative to expand on this concept.

Hopefully these explanations plus the video tutorials in the future will help anyone who wants to pursue this, The above video adds a little extra dimension. An appropriate video frame was chosen as the foreground image to paint. The video was begun using offset and a start time reflecting this exact frame to get the desired effect. The live video portion was keyframed to zero opacity until just after the chosen display time for the finished painting, then having been carefully matched using the grid feature in PTE begun at the end of the painting display to give life to the painting... Just for fun folks...

Best regards,

Lin

Meilleures salutations,

Lin
