  1. While Igor is hopefully resting, perhaps another member could answer the following:

Using version 7.0, Beta 6, I created a small demo sequence with and without a small video (avi) which is 347KB in size (on disk). The executable (exe)is 8.7MB without the avi and becomes 11.2MB with the avi (10.9 MB when "Don't include file to EXE" is checked. The ZIP package of all components is 6.2MB.

Is it necessary for the EXE file to contain the avi in uncompressed form? (I presume that is the reason for the much larger EXE compared to the ZIP package)

  2. Your email program is attempting to protect you from viruses and will not let you open certain types of attachments. I use Windows Mail (Vista)but Outlook Express has a similar option to allow opening these files. In "Tools" "Options" "Security" uncheck the item "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". Of course you should have an updated antivirus program running.

  3. Thanks everyone for the positive feedback.

Usually a particularly satisfying photo shoot is the impetus for my making a slide show. In this case it came from the music. I heard Melissa Venema, a fourteen year old girl, play her trumpet rendition of Taps, "Il Silenzio" on utube and knew immediately that I needed to create a story around the music. I was familiar with the Geronimo story from a movie I watched before going to visit the Chiricahua mountains in Arizona and it was a "no brainer" to amalgamate the story, the music and the photographs into the slide show. The historical photos are of public record and found on the website: "Native American Prisoners of War: Chiricahua Apaches 1886-1914" http://www.chiricahua-apache.com/ a worthwhile site to visit to learn more about the Chiricahua.

  4. After visiting the Chiricahua National Monument and other areas of southeastern Arizona in 2010 I created a scenic slide show including a brief history of Geronimo's life. The show is 58M in size and about seven minutes in duration. It is ideally viewed on a wide screen monitor or HD television. I use an HDMI cable to connect my computer to my Sanmsung 1080i television.

Comments and criticism's are welcome, particularly relating to how the show is viewed on different monitors and computers.

The show is available at Beechbrook.com with many thanks to Bill

  5. Perhaps this thread is suffering the same as a large slide show rolleyes.gif

Howevre, nobody has confirmed my earlier statement that I would like confirmed as true or false.

Currently when we create a DVD through PTE, as a part of that change all the images will be reduced to 720*576 for the DVD. I assume there is some variation to allow for format issues, but generally the images we create will be reduced to 720 by whatever. So, it doesn't matter in DVD terms whether we start with a file size of 1920*1080 or 1024*768.

Is that because members are not sure either or the thread was missed.

Perhaps so Barry, but I prefer to use Photoshop to resize an image. With Photoshop I can do an unsharp mask prior to saving (changing image size will have some affect on sharpness) - also Photoshop may have a better algorithm when re-sizing than the PTE software. Therefor prior to creating a DVD I re-size all the images first. I haven't attempted to test the difference in quality.

  6. A series of images taken over the last year in the Lake District National Park. It can be found at www.beechbrook.com Grateful thanks to Bill for hosting.

    Maureen

Maureen, thanks for sharing. The photography and slide production is excellent. This show will remain for sometime on my desktop for future inspiration. Modesty may prevail, but I would like to see a closing slide showing who produced the show, took the photos, where and when etc.------but then I'm somewhat compulsive that way.

  7. Ken and Dick,

Good suggestions. However in order to do this you first have to turn off "Synchronize Music and Slides" in Project Options and also this defeats the OPs purpose because then you can't then see the waveform in the timeline in order to synch slides to specific beats or portions of the music.

The ability to start music in the normal manner (via the Project Options / Music Tab) synched to a specific slide would definitely be an asset IMHO. The other alternative would be the ability to be able to "slide" the music along the timeline which has been suggested elsewhere.

    DaveG

Dave, my point is that you complete synchronizing the music watching the waveform in the timeline. Once the music is synced you then add the black slides at the beginning and end and turn off "Synchronize Music and Slides" and the use the "Customize Slides" option to place the music on the second slide. You needn't see the waveform at this stage since the music is now synched.

  8. I've got a 42" Toshiba telly and a Toshiba E1 HD DVD player (yeah, I backed the wrong horse - but just as with the VHS/Betamax "war", the superior technology lost) - but the E1 does a terrific job with upscaling and DVD's written with Video Builder and image files sized specifically for normal SD viewing look extremely good on my system - much better than on my previous system. I must admit I was blown away when I first watched a DVD done this way. Unfortunately, I've gotten used to the better quality now (amazing how quickly that happens).

    Carol

Thanks for the reply, Carol. I've been using a quality, but one of the original, DVD players and with prices so low for upconverting DVD's I thought I might purchase one while I wait for the Blue Ray machines to come down in price.

  9. Ken,

You should be able to burn to DVD disc with 'Include additional folders and files to disc' ... which includes your show exe and individual image files.

    Just use checkboxes :

    -Burn DVD Disc

-Include additional folders and files to disc

*Test first with shorter file size shows on DVD-RW disc to shorten process/burn time

*Try lowering the DVD disc burn speed in VideoBuilder ... and /or ... diff brand disc/format

I had already lowered the DVD disc burn speed to the minimum with no success. I also only had the "Burn DVD Disc" and "Include additional folders and files to disc" checked.

I have now tested with a shorter show (327 MB) and a smaller "Included" folder (49 MB). And it worked!! Now I will experiment with different sized shows and "Included" folders to see if I can find a limit.

    Thanks, Ken

  10. The problem has been solved - sort of.

I removed "Include additional folders and files to disc" and then I was able to burn the DVD show.

Is there no way to add the exe file and photo files to the same disc that the DVD show is on so that the owner has a choice on how to view the show as well as have access to the original photos?

  11. When attempting to burn a DVD or create an ISO image and after the VOB files multiplexing is complete, I get the following error:

    Burn.exe has stopped working

    Problem signature:

    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

    Application Name: burn.exe

Then, "Failed connection with Burn.exe" and then all temporary files are deleted.

The show is estimated at 2.12 GB + 552 MB of additional photo files plus the exe file. It takes approximately 45 minutes to create the MPEG2 and VOB files.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 530 dual core processor with 4 GB Ram (3.4GB available to Windows). There are over 200 GB of space available on the hardrive. Video card is an NVidia 8600 GT with 256 MB memory.

This has happened with Version 5.0 and 5.1 Beta 4 and 9 and the latest 5.1Release-Candidate (December 13, 2007)

I have burned shorter shows without a problem.

    Any suggestions?

    Ken

  12. I solved my problem. I opened the pte file in Microsoft Word and used the "find" feature to locate the phrase "personal=1", which indicates that a slide had a check box in "Use customized settings for this slide".

I found about a dozen slides that had this checked but they were totally random and there was no reason that I would have intentionally checked this box. Very Strange!

But all is now well and I can preview with music from anywhere within the slide show.

    Ken

  13. When I preview the slide show from anywhere other than the first slide the music starts from the beginning. I'm aware that I need to have "Synchronize music and slides" checked in the Main screen of Project Options but I get an error message: "When you use "Synchronize music and slides" option, you cannot use personal playlists of slides."

What is a personal playlist? I have imported slides from a previous show. I also tried having music play from an individual slide at one time but I think I deleted that. I have 350 slides in the show and I don't know which slide I tried to play music in.

    Ken

  14. When I went to review an old slide show I wasn't able to determine which music file was being used. In "Project Options" "Music" tab. It shows a list of music files in the box "Background music for show". Unfortunately there isn't enough horizontal space to completely view the file, even when the slider is moved to the far right.

The file is "C:\Users\KGL\Videos\Tintern Abbey resized\90 The Might of Rome.mp3" and I'm only able to see up to the word ".......Rom"

A second file with the same name, but with the extension ".wav" is in the same directory and I'm unable to tell which file I used in the slide show.

Perhaps you could make changes such as letting the slider move further to the right, expand the window, or let "mouse hover" view the entire name.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium at 1680 x 1050 pixels.

  15. Hi Ken - welcome to the forum

Yes - by all means you can add / burn any files to the DVD.

When you get to the "Burn" section, there at the bottom you will see " Include Additional Folders and Files To Disc " just check the box and then click the "Browse" button to go to folder.

    Video Builder

    post-14-1187239084_thumb.jpg

I have also used Nero 7 and there are others, however very simple with Video Builder.

Thanks Ralph, for the information. It convinced me to purchase the Deluxe version, which I have done. I will put the "exe" file and the original photos in a folder on the DVD so the person receiving it has the choice of watching the video on either their TV or their computer as well as have access to the high definition original photos that they can print.

    Ken

  16. I'm a new member and have learned much already from the members.

Is it possible to add the original image files when creating a DVD video when using VideoBuilder (or other DVD burning software)?

I would like to distribute a slideshow on a DVD that can be played in a DVD player and also allow the recipient to print the full size images using a computer or outsourcing to a lab.
