  3. Hi Barry

Enjoy Sydney - such a beautiful place & give my best wishes to AV friends over there :)

Good to know you're getting over your phobia about Camera Clubs tongue.gif Lol

You may yet join one ! biggrin.gif

Things moving forward fast in UK AV scene too busy to post often.

Best Wishes to you & Carol

  4. As I run so many AV events and National / International comps I do replace my laptop and computer very often.

I would guess 18 months. Has to be very high specifications.

If I feel my own equipment wouldn't be up to scratch then I would borrow some which was.

The main criteria is always the graphics card.

Sadly when buying a laptop the graphics card is often the specification which is rarely listed on the info in most big Computer Stores.

Take along an AV which is very graphics hungry and play it on the laptop before you buy.

Best ones to use to test can be Wings Platinum AVs whose files can be huge.

If it plays those your LP will be fine for PTE and others and you are safe to run most AV comps

Windows 7 has no problems with the older PTE sequences.

Often Aldi sells Medion Laptops which are very reasonably priced and also very high specifications - very good value.

Aldi sells electronic computer gear on special offers.

Recently Tesco had a very high spec LP for sale too so you have to be aware of what you want and look out for the good deals when they come up.

Don't buy the more ordinary home specification ones, look at all the specs - they do often list the graphics capabilities.

Look for those listed for games and video work - generally have the better graphics cards.

    Hope this helps.

  5. The 321 International AV Competition is run from Hayange in France by Ricardo Zarate and his team.

They organise and collect in all the entries and all the fee money.

Many other countries then take part - in 2012 it will be shown and judged in

    France

    Belgium

    Italy

    Rumania

    South Africa

    Mauritius

    Germany

    UK

    Oman

    Switzerland

    Argentina

    Australia

    Portugal

    Poland

It is therefore a "Super circuit Av competition " and please note that UK and Australia also takes part Barry. biggrin.gif I am amazed you haven't heard of it.

We've done the UK at Aldbourne, Wiltshire since 2006 and I usually create a UK web site for it. Sorry been too busy recently - on my to do list sad.gif

We do rely heavily on money from those who attend the Gala day as the ticket fees there pays for our UK expenses for the judges, hall fees, etc

So I hope lots of UK AV workers & friends will come along on June 24th to Aldbourne. biggrin.gif

It is a wonderful opportunity to see top class International AV work from all over the world.

Many of the 321 entrants do not enter other events so that is the only place you'll see their work.

The range of talent and variety of types of AV entered is exceptional. Do attend if you can !

Barry you entered your work in the UK's Geoffrey Round Competition one year.

That event has now been renamed the " IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition" and takes place each March in Capel Curig, Snowdonia (March 10th / 11th 2012)

    http://www.nwawavg.org.uk/

The Royal Photographic Society AV Internationals will be held at Cirencester in September 2012 http://www.rps.org/g...nal-AV-Festival

Lots going on in the UK and abroad in the AV scene and always such a pleasure to meet fellow AV workers at these events. biggrin.gif

Sorry if I have little time to chat if I'm judging or organising at some blink.gif

Great social events as well as watching and sharing wonderful AV talents.

Recently my health and incredible busy schedule of judging and giving shows & lectures have meant I have not had the time to update my own web sites (in particular www.digital-av.co.uk) but will try to do so soon.

Have to concentrate on others first for the RPS.

Hope to meet some of you at Focus on Imaging - NEc, Birmingham, England we will be on RPS stand C60 Sunday & Monday - all day :)

    http://www.focus-on-imaging.co.uk/

RPS AV - new panel = Multimedia and Narrative.

29th February is the very first Advisory Day under the auspices of the new Multimedia and Narrative Distinction for Licentiateship and Associateship.

Anyone considering putting in for a distinction is most welcome, whether as participant or observer. The first RPS Assessment Day is on April 4th.

Remember - statistically, applicants who attend Advisory Days have a greater chance of achieving a distinction.

Good to catch up with several PTE Users at Photo Training Overseas in Tunisia recently. smile.gif

Catch up with you at PTO next year biggrin.gif possibly the Lanzarote / Canary Islands ?

    Best Wishes

    Maureen

    catch me on Facebook

  6. I have been running International AV comps for many years and also my own AV shows, AV days, demonstrations, and always made my menus using PTE.

We get AVs from all over the world using lots of different software and have always managed to make a PTE menu work to open them during the competitions or presentations.

Some years ago I found that I had a problem at times with some AVs opening and running behind the PTE menu so I always made the menus in windowed mode. @ resolution size of the AV projector.

Then if anything opens behind the menu I quickly click top right to drop the menu.

Must try a menu with latest PTE to double check it all works.

Have opened PTE, M-Ojects, ProShow Producer, Wings, etc plus software programs e.g Photoshop, Audition, PTE, all using a PTE menu for competitions or demonstration days with rarely a problem.

If I say never the next - the next menu I create will refuse to work (Sod's Law) smile.gif

  7. Hi

The 321 AV Competition is an International Supercircuit, with entries shown in countries across the globe.

The aim is to make your sequence less than 3 minutes 21 seconds.

    So 3m 20sec is fine.

Adding 3 secs to front and back brings your time on screen to 3m 26sec - over running.

Suggest you either leave off the black slides or make them half a second either end.

Traditionally the black slides came in with the slide / tape days so the audience could get used to the darkness of the hall.

Between each AV there had to be time to change the tapes and carousels to the audience might start to chat, and the dark slide lets the audience know the next AV is running & time to listen.

Not so crucial with digital AVs but many still like to have some lead in time with the black slides, adds to atmosphere, but not essential.

However entering competitions remember to keep to the rules. i.e. 3m 21 secs is maximum time

321 is unique and fun so look forward to seeing your entry Steve.

Closing date is April 8th 2012

UK Gala day will be June 24th 2012 at Aldbourne 10 am start http://www.rps.org/group/Wessex-Centre

The judges will view all the entries and judge together before that day so we will only be able show the top sequences which we can fit into the Gala day.

So all judges view and mark in the same large screen environment.

For full details see the web site :

    http://www.challengediaporama321.com/

click the UK flag for the English version of the site.

  8. Daniel is correct.

Diaporama has been used for many many years.

A few years ago we had a special worldwide show to celebrate 50 years of French Diaporama competitions.

So 2008 ??? is very wrong.

Colin Balls has written an excellent book of the history of AV or Diaporama and Laure has also produced a comprehensive work in french.

There are also several other books, magazines and works available which give a great deal of information about AV / Diaporama.

  13. At the Royal Photographic Society International Av Championships Igor was one of two recipients awarded the prestigious Dobson-Henry medal.

This awrd is not given very often and is awarded for long term services to the AV World.

It was a great honour and shows the high regard and esteem the RPS Av Group give to Igor and his work with PTE.

    Igor was delighted.

The Festival was a great success and it was wonderful to meet so many PTE workers from all around the World.

  14. Hi Barry

Who are your "experts" ? dry.gif

If they're interfering with the author's creativity they can't be an "expert"

What's your definition of an expert? unsure.gif

I remember telling you about PTE & this Forum & then telling you not to quote 72 dpi......

No one is really an expert, as knowledge is too vast and no-one knows everything.

Some make mistakes, some more than others but that's how we learn.biggrin.gif

I know some competition organisers have an odd way of thinking and want you to size everyone's work to fit their boxes!ohmy.gif

They even expect you to recreate an AV to run on some very out of date computer specs and old projectors because they want to run a competition but don't realise they are the ones who should change - their own equipment if they want to run any competitions and show up to date work.

Anyone seriously running an AV comp should ensure they know their "onions" & AVs and have the correct equipment to run the most up to date AVs.

If you're doing it for fun don't run a competition just show and share.smile.gif

The Camera Clubs I visit fortunately don't have daft rules. Maybe it's a strange Aussie rule where you live now?

But then I've said for several years now that Festivals & competitions should be using full HD equipment by now. wink.gif

  15. Just a reminder that the 321 will be held next Sunday

Do come along if you can.

Great opportunity to see International AVs !

Please pass on the information to others.

321 International AV Gala Day - 2010 UK stage: This year the format has been changed for the UK event.

The entries have already been pre-judged before the public Gala Show on Sunday 27th June 2010.

This will avoid any over-run, and allow time for comments from the judges as well as less ‘down-time’ for the audience.

All of the sequences have a maximum duration of 3 minutes 21 seconds, hence the title of the competition.

For the 2010 competition, the entries are being judged at various locations around the world, with stages in

France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands, South Africa, Canada, Chile, Argentina, Australia, Mauritius, Germany, Poland, Oman, Portugal and UK at Aldbourne.

  16. 3-2-1Challenge 2010!

The challenge for 'AVers' is to make a short sequence with a maximum duration of 3minutes 21 seconds, hence the title of the competition. The UK stage will be run by the RPS Wessex DI Group and held in the Memorial Hall, Aldbourne, Wiltshire on Sunday 27th June 2010.

For the 2010 event, the entries will be judged at various locations around the world, with stages in France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands, South Africa, Canada, Chile, Argentina, Australia, Mauritius, Germany, Poland, Oman, Portugal and of course here in Aldbourne! Equally challenging is the fact that your sequence will be marked by judges whose native language is not necessarily the same as your own!

This year we have changed the format for the UK event in that the entries will be pre-judged before the public show on 27th June. This will avoid the over-run we had last year, and allow time for comments from the judges as well as less 'down-time' for the audience.

The competition is organised by GAPHE, a photographic group based in Hayenge in France, and this is the competition's fifth year. GAPHE have produced a 3-2-1 website, but as a lot of the detail is in French the English 'local UK' web versionat http://www.ibateman.co.uk/321/ should make it easier for English speakers to get all the key information.

The 3-2-1 Challenge is an excellent chance to get your sequence viewed at venues all over the world!

    UK Organisers :

    Maureen Albright

    Ian Bateman

We hope you will come along and join us at Aldbourne on 27th June

  17. JPD will be greatly missed, an inspiration to us all and such a loss not only to his close family and friends but also to the whole AV community.

Our deepest condolences go to his family at this sad time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them

May JPD rest in peace in Heaven creating dissolving effects with the clouds and stars above.

He was such a friend and helper to all PTE workers around the world.

    Maureen & Robert Albright
