Burning with DVD builder

I am having trouble burning DVDs with PTE 5.5 Deluxe (and 5.1). Various failures have occurred but the latest (and repetitive) failure is at the start of the burn itself and I get a message saying "This application has

requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

Other times the burn seems to have been completed and the disc ejected but the disk contains nothing. I have used this feature before without difficulty.

In desperation, I created an AVI file and burned a DVD using Roxio 'My DVD Plus' with complete success (even managed to add supplementary video clips which I couldn't ever do with PTE).

I also tried using the pop-up recommended software 'Express Burn' and that failed on two occasions.

I wonder if my copy of PTE is corrupted since the burner seems to work with the Roxio software.

I had the same error message once and then realized I had another application open that also had the ability to burn DVD's. There appeared to be a conflict between the two applications. My simple solution is to make sure there is no other application open that can burn DVDs when I am burning a DVD with VideoBuilder. Observing this rule, I have not had further trouble burning DVDs with PTE 5.5 Deluxe.

I tried shutting down everything but PTE Video Builder and made sure that there wasn't anything running in the background that would use the burner. I also reduced the size of the file to about half what I was using before (I admit I was using a very large file before--about 4.3g) and got the same result. I am stymied.
