  1. Welcome back John!

The lighting effect might be partly explained by the use of fill light in software. Did you by any chance use Adobe Camera RAW and "fill light"?

    Best regards,

    Lin

    Hello Lin,

It's nice to be back. Apologies for the 2nd posting, I'm a bit out of touch with things!

The picture was taken in RAW but I didn't use "fill light" the effect could be seen with the naked eye and is clear in the RAW file. It gives the impression that the sun is shining from the wrong direction!

  2. Dear members,

I have been out of circulation for 3 months. We moved to a small village in Crete in September and I have only this week got back on line (via a satellite link as telephone lines here are rare as frogs teeth). Although our feet havn't yet really come to earth, I'm trying to pick up the threads and get my head round what's new in V.5

In due course, I'll put together a short slideshow about where we live. For now, let it suffice to say that the temperature here today was 25C and the sea is still warm enough for swimming. For now here's a photograph taken from our new house. If anyone can explain the seemingly inverted lighting effect I'd be obliged.

    Best wishes

  4. Hi guys & gals,

I've suffered an eye trauma which will prevent me from much in the way of forum participation for possibly a couple months depending on how recovery progresses. It's nothing permanent but my vision is greatly affected temporarily and it makes it difficult to see what I'm doing. I apologize to those whom I promised more AV Tutorials on how to implement the snow effects, etc. I'll try to keep working on it if I can make out the screen but it's slow going right now....

    Best regards,

    Lin

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  5. When I want to create an exe from my project, everything goes OK the first time but, if I want to create it a second time or if I hit the review button, I then receive this error message

    Cannot open file disk:\repertory\subrepertory\filename.exe.

When I look at the exe file, PTE has save it correctly after all !

I have then to quit PTE and reopen so that I can work again with my project.

Has anybody an idea of what is going wrong ?

PTE version 4.48 (the latest version downloadable from WnSoft.com), Win XP pro SP2

I have uninstalled and reinstalled PTE but the problem is still present.

    Patrick,

I'm affraid that I cannot give you an explanation for this phenomenon. I've never had that error message, but, frequently find it neccessary to close/reopen PTE in order to get preview working. However, since the latest beta update preview has worked fine.

Hope you get the issue resolved.

  6. Hi Ben,

Yes, with a lot of work (several keypoints with their own PZR), it's possible to have a pretty much natural falling movement.

Al is right, John's (Ebenist) "Autumn demo" is a very good example of what can be done :

If you look at the Autumn Demo, and it shows the sort of effect you're after, just shout if you need any futher help.

  7. I know cameras shoot square pixels but I need output for full screen (no bars) 16:9 without zoom, just pans. What exact measurements do I need to make my photos before bringing them into PTE Beta 8R ..? TIA for any help.

    My approach would be:

crop your image to include everything you want to include when the Pan is set up.

Make the height of the images the pixel height of whatever you have set your monitor resolution.

If you have Photoshop, or a similar image editor, this is most conveniently achieved using the Crop Tool

using a pre-set crop height, in pixels, equal to the monitor vertical resolution, leave the Crop Tool

    horizontal pre-set blank

    Good luck

  8. This show was put together by using images from the Hubble telescope and reconstructed planets, comets, and star backgrounds created in Photoshop.

The most difficult part was synchronising the sound movement and explosions of the comets. Still not perfect but working on it. The file is a large one and I do think I have made the show rather too long. Will be interest in any views on the presentation.

    Paul

The imagery and sound were very much enjoyed.

It would have been even better if you had provided some notes or links for those of us with only tenuous grasp of astronomy!

Congratulation and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

  9. John,

The fact that it only occurs during the first second or so of that slide leads me to believe that on your system you are experiencing some interference between the objects on that slide and the transition to the slide.

I have made that observation quite often (particularly with moving text) if: (i) I have some program running in the background, or (ii) if my monitor is set to a resolution much higher than that of the slideshow I am trying to run. In my case, the problem shows up as a momentary discontinuity in the movement of the text objects at the end of the transition and at the start of the next one.

I've mentioned this problem to Igor, but haven't pursued the matter as I can easily change the monitor resolution, or reduce the load on the pc by closing out some other programs. I imagine if your video card was an older vintage, with insufficient RAM, that you would notice it more, too.

I had another go at it. Tried: changing the preceding slide and it's duration, all manner of variations on the screen resolution, even, the resolution of the image itself.

    Zilch!

Then I reduced the transition duration from 4500ms to 1000ms - et voila, everything ran perfectly.

I cannot get my head round the physics of it, particularly as that slide, at the original setting, ran OK on other machines and, in fact, on my own, in another slide show.

I guess it's a bit like it is with the fair sex; just accept their enchanting qualities, whilst being, almost totally, at a loss to understand what makes them tick!

  10. John

    ok here

some shimmer on p/z -- brick work of old mill area

    ken

    Ron, Al & Ken,

    things get curiouser and curiouser!

When none of you saw any shimmering, I copied that slide only into a dummy slideshow. What d'ya know? - no shimmering.

But it's still very evident in the slideshow "Winter".

In fact, to call it shimmering is to understate the phenomenon. It's just like the Aurora borealis in greyscale for the 1st second or so.

    John

  11. John,

You certainly put a lot of effort and creativity into this show! I don't think I have ever seen such a realistic simulation of falling snow - very clever! The lone Canada goose flying over was well done, too. :)

Just one little thing disturbed me while watching the show - the flashing bright transitions between the slides. Otherwise, very nice to watch.

    Al & Ron,

yes I agree with what you say regarding the transitions.

None of the standard transitions gave me what I was trying to achieve; that was, the effect of seeing things through a "Jack-Frost" window (remember them?)

I'll have to think it through.

There was also a strange phenomenon, at least there was on my PC, the last slide, with the closing text, had the most peculiar shimmer in the sky, as it opened, something that I didn't create.

I tried all manner of things to prevent it occuring, but, it obstinately persisted.

Did you get this same result? any idea what is causing it?

    John

  12. I have put a new slideshow called “winter” onto the Beechbrook site.

Trust you will not find the little seasonal joke, it's inclusion was irresistible, too frivolous!

Wishing Igor, his mighty team, all the forum members/readers and all the families, that patiently tolerate our obsessions, a very very Happy Christmas.

  13. Hi dagrace,

Thanks for your input. I'll start by saying that we all have our own way of learning and doing things. Personally, I think life is too short to spend endless hours fumbling in the dark hoping against hope that I can find the light switch.

    leonard

    Leonard,

Please allow me to suggest an analogy.

If you wanted to take up oil painting, how useful, do you think, a manual for you box of paints would be?

PTE, in my view, is artistic rather than merely technical. I do not believe that any two people use the application in exactly the same way. There are so many means of skinning a cat, as it were.

Gaining familiarisation with the "controls" is not that difficult, but, it's a hell of a lot of fun. The real pleasure, however, starts when you start to explore what it is possible to create using this great program.

    Best wishes & Persevere!

    John

  14. Since beta 8 I have found it, almost always following additions or modification to a slide sequence, neccessary to save and shutdown/restart PTE (not reboot) in order to get the preview function to work.

Additionally, when shutting down PTE, I frequently get a Zone Alarm warning-"PTE is trying to access the internet"; hitting "Deny" puts things right and I can then exit normally.

These are not really worrying issues, but, life would be better rid of them.

    John

  15. Some may have wondered why I posted the little sample butterfly slideshow sequence using an animated GIF (workaround) introduction.

    Lin

    Lin,

I tried your workaround and exported the individual layers of an animated GIF (using Image Ready) as PNGs.

    Then I hit the buffers!

The animated gif was a fluttering bird. I wanted to make a sequence, using the decompiled gif frames, to represent the bird moving against a sky background -(Project Options > Screen > Tiled Image).

When I played the PTE sequence, the individual bird frames had been automatically resized to "fit screen"

I could not figure out how to constrain the size of the gif.

Is there a means of achieving this?

    John

  16. The files from my camera are 3000 W and 2000 H so 3:2. I want my pictures to be 1024 by 768 for the projector. I can crop the piture from 3:2 to 4:3 in photoshop. For some pictures not a problem but for others a big problem.

How do you crop or resize the images?

    regards,

    Jan

An option that can be used, as an alternative to using the "background" feature in PTE, is to set slides, that cannot for aesthetic reasons, be sized 1024X768 (eg. those in Portrait format) onto a background slide at 1024X768, created in Photoshop. Then advantage may be taken to use such effects as: Layer effects, Styles, Textures, gradients, other images etc. etc.

    Best wishes

  17. Hi John,

Genuine Fractals, etc., are excellent interpolation programs and will increase the size of the images by adding pixel values gleaned from existing pixels, but do they work appreciably better than Photoshop's Bicubic or Bicubic smoother or Bicubic sharper - not to any great degree.

    Best regards.

    Lin

    Lin,

your comments are much appreciated. I have tried enlarging the particular image that I'm interested in, in Photoshop, using bicubic smoother, in 10% increments. The result does not fall very much short of what would be acceptable, for what I am trying to achieve.

Fortunately, for the sequence I have in mind a pin sharp image, totally free of blemishes, would not be in keeping with the mood of the thing.

Tommy has kindly volunteered to process the image for me. I'm hoping that it will result in a little bit better quality, than that obtained using Photoshop.

At least it will enable me to make a judgement on whether it's worth the investment.

    John

  18. Hi

Can see your dilemma, however if you can only rely on a screen capture why not then use software such as AlienSkin Blowup or GenuineFractals PrintPro to increase image size by up to 800% without any loss of quality. I have found both of these programs work exceedingly well. Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Tommy

    Tommy,

I was interested to read your comments regarding the capability of AlienSkin Blowup & GenuineFractals PrintPro to increase an image size.

I have an image taken from a First World War photograph (so it's quite small) that I want to use in a slideshow, on the subject of Rememberance Sunday, that I'm working on. From your experience, would I get a reasonably satisfactory result, using one or other of these applications, if the size were to be increased to 1024 px wide?

    John
