Creating Masks

I am new to the software and want to produce a mask other than the rectangle or circle offered. Where would I create it and what file type would it need to be so that I can call it up in the mask option?

Create a Black/White image in you image editor (Photoshop, PS Elements, Gimp, ...). Save it as JPG or PNG. Black areas in the mask will produce transparent parts of the masked image, white areas produce opaque parts, grey parts will lead to partial transparency.
