Tom - Peter - Igor, My last Post and Report and Attachments -concern- "Vista Home Basic" solely. As I said the problem does not occur in Vista(Home)Premium nor Vista Business. Vista Home Basic is supplied on 'Packaged PC Systems' such as Dell and others. Thats the vast majority of the retail market in Packaged Computer Systems. The Vista-Hang problem in 'Home-Basic' is intermittent thats why its so infuriating ! One day it happens the next day you can't make it happen and it seems to effect Files over 10/15mB in size... but it also effects other Graphic Programs. _________________________________________________________________________ The 'problem' is recognised by Microsoft thats why I 'linked' you to their Tech.Paper which clearly shows that it is a factual problem which never occured with 2000 nor XP using the same VGA Cards. The only thing thats different is the 'Windows GPU Management System' but if you read the Tech.Paper ~ Microsoft are blaming the GPU Hardware (The Ic's) Whats new ??? In my business situation I advised 9 Vista Owners to return their PCs to the Manufacturers and after some weeks delay the PCs were returned working perfectly.... As they say "the proof is in the repair" so I expect we will have to wait for a delayed SP-1 Service Pak to rectify the problem. In the meanwhile run in 'Windows Mode' as Igor advised only should the problem occur. Cheers, Brian.Conflow.

Hi Guys, I had not forgotten that problem with Vista and PTE ~ I have been chasing the problem because other Graphic Programs are having similar problems despite being Vista compatible. Here is what I have found out:- * I call the problem "Vista Graphics Hanging" (VGH) * It effects "Vista Home" on certain PC's makes. * I can not replicate it with Vista Business nor Vista Premium. * It effects Dell 530's both PC and Laptops running 'Vista Home'. * It also occurs with Acer Laptops running 'Vista Home' * Its common to Intel DC.Processors and AMD Duron Processors. * Concerning PTE it happens with V4.8 and with V.5xxx (any version). * Its also happening with Graphic Functions in Excel and others. This is my personal opinion:- ~ Its nothing to do with the Programs but it is generic in 'Vista Home' solely. It does not hit "Hi-End" PC's and because of that and because PTE has its own Graphics Engine then it comes back down to the Win.Graphics Adaptor" (GPU Management) in the Vista Home Op.System. Here below is a "Quite Paper" on the subject from Microsoft which confirms my suspicions and I would challange their 93% success with 'Vista Home. Brian.Conflow. Igor:- As I said before, 'Vista Home' runs PTE but it never seems to register on the System and this seems to evoke the timeout in the Vista Home GPU, but this timeout doesn't happen with Vista Business nor Vista Premium ~ it also happens with other Graphic Programs. Thanks Igor, It's great to see that this 'feature' has been re-installed in PTE.5xx as I have used it extensively in PTE4.48 for Lectures and Video Conferences. I'm sure many users will welcome the return of this feature ~ Brian.Conflow. -
Jane, With regret I must say this is my last Post on this thread because in fairness its going "off-topic" for this Forum. To answer your recent question 'quoted' below... .."I do not understand how the hansol drivers interact with the nvidia drivers or for that matter how both then interact with the icc profile"... 1) Drivers don't interact, one machine "The Monitor" wants its own drivers so it can set-up its electronic circuits correctly, thus giving you the ability to "adjust" your Monitor. 2) Another Machine your "VGA Card" sends a simple Video Signal to your Monitor. It also want its proper Drivers so it can adjust the 'Video Signal' and the 'Interface-System' between your PC.Microprocessor and the Monitor depending whether your using Win 2000 or XP or Vista and it also adjusts the chosen 'Colour Video Format' in current use. 3) The VGA Drivers 'interact' with Directory-9X so they "fetch" appropriate commands to perform what is required by you, or by the PTE Program, or by any other Graphics Program. IF ANY OF THOSE DRIVERS ARE MISSING BOTH WINDOWS AND THE VGA CARD ATTEMPT TO GIVE YOU "NEAR-MATCH" DRIVERS SO TO GET YOUR COMPUTER UP AND RUNNING. Jane with respect, how many times do I have to say this ?? and if you examine my last Post and your attached "Data-Sheet" it clearly show's that the correct Drivers are missing or not properly installed ! Finally: Where are your 'Utilities Installation Discs' AND your XP-Sp2 System Disc~ these should have been provided by the Maker of your Custom PC...obviously they weren't ? Jane this is not the place to "Fix" your PC ~ you have all the data needed, and its up to you to return to the PC Maker and sort this out. I regret I can no longer continue with this thread as its outside the Forum's terms of reference. Brian.Conflow.

Jane, Here are the facts from the 'System Data-Sheet' which you posted today ~ It appears that I was correct in my analysis concerning your Hansol VDU and other facts I supplied to you ~ so much for your "sp2 Profile" its wrong ! Never believe 'profiles' which are Machine generated - check the facts. The "Attachment" clearly shows whats wrong with your Custom PC. 1) It appears that there are none or very little (generic) Win.Drivers on this PC. 2) The Hansol Drivers were never loaded on to the PC and in default of (item.1) and lack of Hansol Drivers your VGA Cards selected (non-approved) drivers from their own (limited) Libraries these designed for Win 2000 PCs not at all compatible with a Dual-Core XP-Pro running Direct-9X. 3 Finally a bit of advice, DO NOT download Direct-10X at this time otherwise you will be re-building your PC from scratch. This PC needs to go back to the Maker and get these problems rectified before you do anything else and in particular the following need attention:- Driver nv4_disp.dll and its Exe nv4_mini.sys need to be replaced.(See Attachment) Brian.Conflow.

Jane, I have just seen your reply to "Nobeefstu" and consequently I had to edit this Post:- These Questions need honest answers and if you dont know say so:- 1) Have you installed the Hansol VDU Config.Drivers ? 2) Have you installed the GeForce-8600 Config.Drivers from its CD-Disc ? 3) How was your 'Old' VGA Card installed ? from Windows or from its CD-Disc ? 4) Do you know how to 'Load' these Drivers ?.... (Its not a simple matter of just dropping them on to the HD). NOTE:- If there is a 'genuine negative' to any question then you have a genuine problem, now we can get somewhere and get a remedy. Brian.Conflow.
-
Jane, "Nobeefstu's" suggestion is very worthy of pursuit, it may work for you !..... However I think you are being mis-led by what your Custom PC is actually telling you:- I made it very clear that all 'Windows Operating Stystems' come with a limited Library of VDU Drivers. If you don't have your own 'VDU Configuration Drivers' then Windows gives you a set of (nearest-match) Drivers from its Library, these are purely and simply to make your PC and VDU basically functional. (I high-lighted that in my last Post) If those Library Drivers were missing and you had no VDU.Configuration Drivers then the PC and the Monitor would not work at all - The PC would simply "Freeze" and lock out. The "Profile" being loaded to your VGA Card is a (near-match) Driver set from Win.Library They are not satisfactory for your VDU nor your VGA Card(s) and the demands of PTE. Other PC Comparison ~ Packaged PC Systems ~ have completely different set-ups than your Custom Built PC so your comparison to the other "working" PC must surely tell you something !!! So far you have reported the particular fault with 2 "working" VGA Cards on your Custom PC..... I am just beginning to wonder, what else is wrong with this Custom PC ?..apart from the obvious missing VDU Drivers....how were the VGA Cards installed ?....were their Drivers loaded from CD-Disc or taken from Windows ?....and is Direct-9X Library installed ? Brian.Conflow. P.S I note that my friend Ken Cox has advised you of same ~ get a set of VDU Configuration Drivers.
-
Hi Jane, You said... "Is my logic sound?"....sorry I'm afraid not ~ just look at it this way:- How do you know that your new Custom PC has the Drivers for the Flat Screen VDU ? Answer:- you don't know, so all you can do is try it out, but before you do that get a copy of the VDU Drivers from Drivers.Com...because...the PC is going to look for them when it finds the New Hardware registering on its System. It might pick-up a set of "generic" Windows Video Drivers but it is far better for the VDU to have its own Configuration Drivers which are totally different from basic Win Drivers. Microsoft Win.Drivers are designed to give "Basic Functionality" to your PC per se ~ Nothing else is implied or warranteed, they will tell you than should you query them. People don't understand that when they purchase a 'Packaged-System' from Dell etc:- What they are getting is set of Basic Win.Drivers ALSO any Hardware Drivers associated with the supplied: Mouse-Keyboard-VDU-CdDisc/Burner-USB Hub,etc:-All to make it work. This is NOT THE CASE with a Custom-Built PC, because how is the Maker to know what you are going to be using in the future. Brian.Conflow.
-
Jane, All Hansol Monitors are essentially designed for Web-Graphics Usage and they all need their own 'special Drivers' for proper Monitor Configuration ~ prior to any other actions. GeForce-8600 generic Drivers won't work properly (if they were loaded) neither will the Library of Windows (generic) VDU Drivers and I doubt you have the full set of these on a Custom Built PC. Usually with Custom PCs you get the "bare bones" and nothing else as you are expected to be proficient with PC.Systems and its up to you to download drivers which are specific to your special applications ~ I'm sorry thats the way the PC.Industry operates ! To help you out, I suggest you contact Drivers.Com and I give a 'live-link' below as well as an "Attachment" in proof of what I am talking about. When you get the Drivers the VDU will need to be properly configured with a 'Test Card' firstly in sRGB Mode, and then you can use RGB Mode with the sRGB settings. I regret this seems to be a Workshop-Job and I would advise you contact the PC.Maker. Brian. Conflow Services. P.S Hansols are known for problems, even changing 'User Screens' with 2000 and Xp for no apparent reason ~ it always comes down to Installed Driver and Set-up. Jane, I'm sure I also speak for others ~ what exactly do you mean by:- ..."The monitor profile appears to be lost when"... So you got a new PC with a GeForce 8600 Vga Card which is excellent, What is the make of the New PC ?... What is the make of the Monitor ?... Was the Monitor supplied by the PC Maker ?.. There are a few issues here which can't be answered without more detail about your PC Setup ~for instance~ did you buy the system as a complete package from Dell etc; or did you buy the PC Components for self-assembly ? Brian.Conflow.

AAAhh Shucks Ken, One has to be diplomatic about these things and what better way than to suggest a compromise not fuel a conflict ~ Now I plead the 5th Amendment, nothing more to say. Brian.
-
I agree Ken ~ but the Lad seems to own the PC ~ Lets not "open" that can of worms, not even in jest !~! Brian.

Bart, Nothing wrong thats the way it is ~ Realtime and Adobe and Quicktime and Norton and Macromedia install Files within the "Microsoft Shared Programs Folder" and their Uninstall is never successful until you remove those Files from that Folder. You then need to use a Reg-Cleaner to remove the now 'dud entries' from the 'File of Types Folder' - dont try this manually. Use Win Iobit Cleaner (its Free) and its damn good. These 'orphan Files' will drive you mad with them trying to find the parent Files so they have to go ~ Its very much like PTE when it looses an Image ~ it nags you till you find it ~ unless you open the Program and find the "1kB Pointer" (where the image used to be) and then delete the pointer !! Link: http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html Brian.Conflow.
-
And if the PTE 5xx option doesn't work for you, you can always open the PC.Control Panel. Start Button--->Settings--->Control Panel--->Users--->Create a 'Power User Client' for you Dad with his own 'Password' and Admin user permissions. This does not give him Full Admin permissions. While you are in there you can 'edit-out' other non-user accounts or 'duds' Brian.Conflow.
-
Bart, Thats good advice from Igor ~ I only hope its not too late and that you have not as yet "Re-Installed" XP. By some fortune if you have not re-installed XP yet ~ make sure you go and find your "Drivers Folder" and make a copy of this to a Memory-Pen, because the re-install tends to wipe out imported non-generic drivers but also over-writes imported ocx's ~ You will really need that Driver Folder on re-install. Don't trust the Installer Copy of your old System ! Also "Link" to the Microsoft Site and get it to Scan your PC for possible errors. High Definition from a PTE slide show
Conflow replied to Ronniebootwest's topic in General Discussion
Ronnie, To better explain the 'anti-flicker Button' you must look at this from the point of view of the TV Set. Cinema When in a Cinema you see a Film projected on to the Screen at a rate of 24 Frames per/second. That means 24 individual Pictures/sec ~ each of which is slightly different which gives the illusion of depth and movement. Television In the the U.K and most of Europe we use the PAL TV System which means that we are looking at a normal TV Screen which shows 50 Frames per/second ~ each Frame comprises of 2 Images, more below. For technical reasons we make the TV Film at 25 Images/sec, but we also make a copy of each individual Image which we add between the primary Images for various reasons and to simulate 'movement'. Example:- Image1/Copy---Image2/Copy---Image3/Copy---Image4/Copy......This is called "Interlaceing" which gives 50 "Interlaced Frames" per/second, each Frame comprising of 2 images.. If we didn't do this we would see a noticable 'Flicker' on our TV Screens due to the Image retention of the 'colour-coatings' on to the back of our glass TV Screens. Its the reason for the Anti-Flicker Button in PTE/AVI because of the way the AVI is made. HD-Television In HD-TV we make 50 Images/sec and 50 Interlaces/sec ~ giving a Full 100 Frames per/sec which the human eye can't differentiate ~ So "turn-off" the Anti-Flicker Button for best Image as Igor said. Hope this simply explains all.... Brian.Conflow. -
Bart, Just to remind you, if you are using XP-SP2, you can restore the PC.System back to a known 'Good Operation Date' without having to Re-Install the OP.System. That "Restore Utility" should be somewhere within the "Start Menu Programs" Lists. Thats:- Start Button -->Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools etc, etc; Brian.Conflow. P.S It might be worth your while trying out "PixBuilder Studio" see PTE Home Page.
-
Bart, I think this problem is quite simple:- You seem to be running your PTE Program in the "English Language" but you are running the AVI Builder in "Dutch/German ?" ~ this would certainly create the unusual "Access Violations" as the AVI Builder (as currently used) can not understand English !! Check it out... Brian.Conflow.

Andre, I would need more data on the 'Type of LCD-TV' before I could answer your Cable question and whether it is using Component Video or Interlaced and what Croma System is it using (See below). There is a major conflict in the TV Industry ~somewhat like the 'Betamax -V- Pal' debacle~ that took place some years ago. We have the same scenario all over again and it boils down to 3 arguments,viz:- 1) How do we accomodate existing VTR-Recorders and existing DVD Players with HD-Digital TV with consideration to the current Analog Technology in use and the Digital Technology of Y-Pb-Pr being used on recent DVD-Recorders which is incompatible with the newer Y-Cr-Cb Television System but is compatible with most Commercial DVD-Discs ? 2) How do we accomodate (New Technology) DVD-Recorders using the new Y-Cr-Cb Colour System which is compatible with the new Digital Transmitters using Y-Cr-Cb but incompatible with other Video sources ? 3) Then we have the New Plasma Display TV's ~ better Black/White resolution, better Colour rendition, and brighter ~ which makes them more suitable for Home Theatre than the current crop of LCD-TV's. To my knowledge there is one DVD-Recorder Manufacturer who is using a switchable 'Dual-System' and I think its 'Sanyo'....you would need to check that out. Andre, I don't see any resolution on the horizon in the near future for these conflicts of interests but sure as hell the Television Stations who have invested and adopted the Y-Cr-Cb System are not going to change. This creates a major dilema for PTE Users...and I don't know the answers...its a "Catch-22" situation. Brian.Conflow.

Tom, Good man yourself ~ many thanks for the reply, that explains all ~ so in reality it is a good Screencapture Utility (some of them are awful) as to whether SVIFK can accept that I dont know. I had visited the site but didn't download anything. I love your definition of Hi-Res...anything above 800x600...in fairness that sometimes works better than Big Res! All the best... Brian.

VIUS ALERT Hi All, I do know that this is Off-Forum, but in the interests of keeping your PC safe there is a new version of the old "W32Netsky.Virus" on the loose since A.M this morning.(BST) This version:- W32Netsky.P@mm originated way back in 2004 but has popped up again in a 'new suit' and this time its virulent although its still classed as Rating.3. In my case it came through our Network Server (despite our Firewall) and came through my own personal 3-Comm Firewall ~ Norton Executive caught it before any damage was done. Norton could not fix-it, it was quarantined, then deleted, followed by a Full-Scan. There were no after-effects after the deletion process. Delivery:- Its coming thro Spam-Mail in the body text of the Mail as .'txt' and as .'doc' It does not need any attachment nor for you to open anything for it to effect its delivery. Its coming as 2-3 attacks within the one EMail session of some 20 EMails. It hits:- 95-98-98se-ME-NT-2000 and XP (all versions) It scans the HD,implants itself and will attack the System, then IE.Explorer and a whole range of Microsoft MIME Components and your VGA.System despite the fact that Microsoft have 'bullet-proofed' MIME many times before. If you have forgotten to update your Anti-Virus ~ you are wide open to this (new) vicious "Pest" Brian.Conflow.

Kori, Following up on the advice from John and Bruce here are 2 important things to remember:- If you are re-sizing any Images make sure you are using a 'Lossless Conversion Program' and do not include 'Exif Data' within the Images. (Not everyone is using Photoshop). Exif Data causes ringing and smear in the Red Colour spectrum and fringing in Blue Colours particularily so if you have to do:- 2 or 3 passes of "Save-As" when you are Editing. If your Camera allows, turn-off 'Exif Data'. If you want to retain Exif Data its better to make a 'Thumbnail-Library' of the origional Photos and then use an Exif-Editor to remove this data from the origional Photos (see below). The more you edit an Image and "Save-As" the more the compression you are applying to the Image and ultimately it will start to come apart. With Image Exif Data switched-on this effect is accellerated because the Exif Data can't be compressed and tends to 'erupt' within parts of the Image (dark-smears) and 'bleeds-out' to the edges of bold parts of the Image this is called 'fringing'. It would happen anyway with too many "SaveAs" but with Exif turned on it happens after the first "SaveAs". Its just 2 more of those things you have to watch out for. Link to a good Compression Manager (Shareware):- http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/BetterJPEG/betterjpeg.html Link to a good Exif Editor (Freeware):- http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Exifer/Exifer.html Have fun with PTE.... Hi Tom, Are you sure that "Fraps" will open-up a PTE.Exe File ?...or does is simply capture a "playing" Exe ? The reason I ask is that 'Granots Program' and others do exactly the same job of Screencapture of PTE and the quality of this is dependent on the screen-resolution of the Monitor, (ie:-The signals coming from the VGA Adapter). This simple method will not produce a Hi-Res AVI. I agree with Ken, I do not know of any worthwhile Program which is capable of de-compiling a PTE.Exe in order to extract its JPeg contents so one can make a quality AVI File. One would have to know the PTE source code to do that ! I vaguely remember an Admin thread from Igor ~ he said that he was looking into that possibility for PTE.5xxx I did have a look at the "Fraps Program" which is geared to Video ~ perhaps we are all missing something here ~ could you give more details about this Software as this problem has turned up on this Forum more times than I care to remember ?? Brian.Conflow.
-
Andre, I am pleased that it worked out for you ~ Quote....Now my monitor reads a contrast of 92 and brightness of 23....Andre,thats not far off 83-29 which I personally use but I advised you 70-30 as a starting point. Andre, you LCD Television ~ you said you are using RGB Input Connections ~ thats not a good idea as they are composite Video Inputs and the losses are very high. If your TV has a "Y.Cr.Cb Input" you would be well advised to get a "RGB Converter to Y.Cr.Cd Input" and use that Converter to connect to the TV. The quality factor is at least 5/7 times improvement and if its an LCD HD-Television the quality will be superb. Brian. Conflow Services.

SVISK4, I am not too sure that I understand you correctly ~ Do you want to convert an existing PTE.Slideshow into an AVI File directly from the Slideshow Exe File....?? Yes, such types software exist, but to my knowledge you can't convert the actual EXE.File to an AVI File. However "AOA Media" supply Software to convert DVD to AVI and Video to AVI but I cant be certain that this will work with a PTE Slideshow to AVI. Contact them and send a small PTE Show to see if its possible. "See Attachment" and "Link" to their Website. AoA Media are one of the leading Software Manufacturers in Video Technology. Brian.Conflow. http://www.aoamedia.com/
