  5. Uploading Problem

    For 2 years I have not been able to upload a show to Beechbrook and I have definetly put it down to AOL, for I have tried to upload on 4 machines. Bill from Beechbrook kindly accepted it as an email which I see he has suggested you do (good Guy Bill :D ) One further point I would make, that I came up against in my first upload was That AOL has a file attachment limit of 15MB, so I could not send it as an email either, I believe other ISP's have limits too. Eventually people on this forum suggested a file splitting program so after a couple of frustarting weeks it all worked. :)

    So keep trying and I look forward to seeing your work.

    Hi All

    Just to say a new show is now on Beechbrook. I have actually only done the encoding for the show is by my other half, she is going to learn PTE soon, now that she can see how straight forward it can be.

    The original show was made in the late 1970's with a Zenith E Camera and brings back memories of our early days in photography where we did our shows on a mechanical dissolve unit controlled by a bicycle cable, (we still have it and it was used last month!) and I had to remember the sound track and manual synch it every time any show was presented, and we would do 2 * 45 minute presentations in an evening. Then we moved onto dedicated electronic units.

    In keeping with the original I have not done any fancy edit work in Photoshop at all for the re-making of this production. But I have now started cleaning up and generally improving the overall quality, but I quite like it as it is. We had real pleasure in taking an old show and so easily transferring it to the modern medium.

    I too have been a photographer for many many years, also a judge for both Photographs and audio visual shows so I know what you mean when you look at sloping horizons. I always called them 'uphill water' and people soon learnt to correct this fault. Very often the attention to small points can make the difference between something which is good and something which is worth many more points.

    I did download 'Dark Table' the day you annouced it and I tried immediately and found the way you had organised to be very good. I have meant to go back to it and put it thru its paces better but have not had time yet. When I do I will report further. But I like what I see so far.

    Hi All

    Its definetly Horses for Courses here. I, like lots of other members on the forum use different programs for their different facilities. Multimedia builder is excellent for making interactive type presentations. I think PTE is excellent for slide presentations.

    As ever you get straight to the point. It would be good if we did discuss other than just technical matters as we seem to have been doing a lot just lately.

    Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression but I was quite clear in my suggestion. It is not a question of “wrong train” but rather one of “different trains”.

    At the end I made the suggestion that Igor could develop 2 different programs one along the line of the traditionalists and another tailored to those who want more along the lines of present day modern MULTIMEDIA.

    Next you state you agree with nobeefstu. QUOTE

    Nobeefstu actually says QUOTE (see his contribution a few further up in the thread)

    I do believe my contribution agreed with those exact thoughts as also expressed by JRR whose quote from nobeefstu attracted my attention.

    I agree that we all have different ideas about slideshows but I was not discussing what is a good slideshow or not, but the elements which go to make up a good slideshow regardless of its aesthetics.

    Regarding ‘joking ? losing its original ethos’ No I was not! I was not arguing but agreeing again with nobeefstu and Igor. QUOTE

    I do believe that Igor has achieved all this and more. In over 30 years of making ‘Slideshows’ I have taken my shows to many, many places but Igor’s programming skills have allowed my shows to be shown all over the world to a far greater audience than I could ever reach personally.

    In conclusion this is because as nobeefstu says, “for all PCs to enjoy” the rest is due to Igor and all the people on this forum and their input.

    You are totally and utterly correct. Over the past 2 years or so I have seen many excellent shows on Beechbrook using various versions of PTE in its simplest and purest of forms.

    The beauty of a good slide show is in its simplicity and use of simple rules (from the days when we only had projectors to work with and in my case years ago simple mechanical blades controlled by a brake cable from a bicycle!) PTE developed into a sophiscated and excellent example of this principle. If we go much beyond this principle then we will have an oversized (PTE still fits on a floppy) piece of bloat ware that may appeal to many but lose its original ethos.

    I am not against progress but the point PTE has reached now I feel offers the majority of us the best of all worlds and just needs to be rounded out and not over developed.

    If Igor wants I am sure he can split his programming skills into two products ( Igor you can increase your revenue here). 1, the original PTE with improved facilities and 2 a more multimedia type program for those who require that type of product.

    Ok Guys what do we think?

    That to me is the answer if you have it all in segments then it is akward but easier to swap about if you do it a lot. A big file of audio means re-editing and re synch all the time.

    Both Al and Jims advice is right.

    I too still do 35mm shows (3 kodak carousels for sale soon) and find with the later PTE versions synching is fine by manual entry and viewing the wave form on a dedicated audio program, ie Cool edit etc. My Fields of Fire show is 16 min 23 seconds long and contains many very vital sycnh points. 4 within 1 min of the end. This was programmed last year in V3.18 before we had all these now extra facilities.

    We really dont want to make PTE too heavy in facilities because it then defeats its original purpose. An excellent programme that fits on a FLOPPY. Microsoft cannot do that!
