  1. I got "Image Load error:" as it cycled showing each image's path, but not the image.

I'll also step in here because I've been using PTE for a long time and never had a problem before except for problems that were real bugs in PTE beta versions that Igor then fixed.

I've also just recently been getting this "Image Load error" message for the first time (PTE 5.1). I recently bought a new scanner - the very high-end EPSON V750 PRO which scans at 6,400 dots-per-inch, optical. What that means in practice is that now each of my jpg files is around 25MB. I'm working on a slideshow now that has only 7 of these very large images - with PZR effects. I have one of the most modern and powerful PCs you can build/buy today (I custom built it to be extremely powerful just for HD video production) and my slideshow should be a piece of cake for this PC. But I get the "Image Load error" on both .exe output and .avi output from PTE.

At this point I speculate that PTE 5.x is unable to use the PC's resources in some scenarios where the size of the source files is large relative to the configuration (powerfullness) of the PC and it uses this error message as some kind of "catch-all" error scenario within the program.

I hope Igor will research this and let us all know what's going on.

  2. Arthur,

    You made the right decision!

Please remember the difference between the concepts of "how do I do this" - where "this" may be something like producing a DVD versus "how do I do this with PTE" - where knowledge of the former is required for knowledge of the latter.

There are many - including me - who are here to answer specific questions you may have.

  3. Hello Potwnc, (Ray)

Thankyou for taking the time to produce this HD-DVD for me.

    Ron,

A more complete response now that I'm back... what I sent you is not an HD-DVD. It would not play back on an HD-DVD player. It is an AVCHD DVD... the physical disc was a normal, single layer, 4.7GB DVD. (It was a DVD+R but will be recognized as a DVD-ROM because I bitset it to that format.) The file structure was close to - but not exactly the same as - that found on commercial Blu-ray discs, which is why it will play back on most Blu-ray players.

Make sure you understand the differences among these different, but related, terminologies as it can be very confusing to others if we misuse the terminology.

  4. Peter,

Your steps pretty much describe what I do... but I would add another step at the end for those of us who want the final product as a video instead of a Windows executable file. That step is rendering (burning would be another final step if the output is to DVD/BD etc.) PTE has come a long way - first with the ability to even output video at all(avi) then with the ability to render and burn to DVD and, with 5.1, the ability to mix existing video into the project.

Similarly to your points above, I'd say there are already excellent tools on the market for these final step(s). I use Vegas Pro 8 and DVD Architect Pro 4.5. Now these are high-end, professional grade, expensive products. But then I'm working on a full-length documentary, in High-Definition and which I want to look as professional as possible. To give some perspective - to date this is a has been an 8.5 -year project (I started the planning in mid 1999 and took the first photos later that year). I've been in serious post-production mode for about 3 months now and I only have about 15 minutes of finished material!

I suspect most PTE users aren't working on projects this elaborate or of this size and so what PTE can now do in this area will be fine for most users. But for others - like me - the DVD Builder component is something I just won't use. Nor would I have any use for any audio manipulation that might get put into PTE - but again others will.

So I'm both agreeing and disagreeing with you. Ultimately WnSoft will decide what this product wants to be as it grows up and the market will determine how commercially successful it is. Right now I would use no other software (and I've tried various of them) for the assembly and polishing but those are my only 2 uses of PTE as it exists today and as far into the future as I can see.

  5. I'm very close to burning my first and making sure it plays back on a Blu-ray player. I'll report my results to the forum.

I've now burned 2 AVCHD DVDs. One is the first 15 minutes of my documentary, the other is from Ron's project.

They both look excellent played back on Blu-ray players connected to large, 1080p HDTVs (many thanks to my local HDTV store :-)), Sony PlayStation 3 and a laptop with a Blu-ray buner and software player.

I will update the HD appendix of the User Guide when I get back from my next assignment at the end of November. In the meantime, feel free to post any questions here.

  6. All I want to do really is make a PTE Slide show and then burn it to a DVD that is in High Definition and will play in HIGH DEFINITION via a Blue Ray player. Ray seems to be very close to doing this and I will watch his progress with great interest.

Ray, do I have to use special 'HD' VD discs or will the normal discs be OK?

    Ron

Ron, if this is all you want to do then you need a PC DVD burner and (depending on the length of your show) it may need to be capable of burning DVD dual layer disks. You don't need any special HD discs, just normal DVDs (I'd recommend DVD+ over DVD-) or DVD dual layer disks depending on the length of your show. You also need software that can render the PTE output file to AVC-HD format. Finally, you need a Blu-ray player that can playback AVC-HD format. Most new ones can but many older models can't. The manufacturer's web site should say whether the particular model can or not.

An alternative is WMV-HD format on normal DVD discs. The rendering software (Windows Media Encoder) is free from Microsoft's web site but fewer players will be able to play it once you've burned the DVD.

If this is a one-time project contact me privately and I may be willing to burn your show to a DVD for you.

  7. 1. Can PTE (via the 'create AVI' option) create a HD file?

You'll have to define what you mean by "HD file"... PTE can create AVI files that meet the HD specs, but you need third-party software to render that to a format and medium for TV playback.

    2. If an AVI file is created, how can this be burned in HD format?

Again, using third-party software only at this time. Perhaps WnSoft will support this in a future version but for now PTE writes only to DVD format (which is not HD).

    3. Can it be done using Nero or must it be Pinnacle Studio (Version 9)?

I believe the latest version of Nero will support both the rendering and burning to HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats and discs. I'm sure their web site would have that information? Pinnacle Studio 9 does not support HD period. 10 kind of does but was always something of a flakey product for many users, including me (not just me saying this... see their forums). They claim version 11 (the latest) can write a HD-DVD using a regular DVD burner. See their forum for actual success by users. If you're considering it I'd strongly recommend looking at Vegas Pro (which is what I use) or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum as alternatives.

Finally, has anybody actually succeeded in making a HD DVD? If so, do you need to have a HD DVD player in order to play it?

See above re: Pinnacle Studio 11. Remember to distinguish between HD-DVD (the format) and HD content burned to standard DVD discs. The latter can be a WMV-HD DVD (I have created these successfully but you can't officially use the term on your finished product until you've submitted it to Microsoft for certification). Or it can be AVC-HD DVD. Vegas Pro 8 supports this and I'm very close to burning my first and making sure it plays back on a Blu-ray player. I'll report my results to the forum.

  8. I like to "hold time points" when I need to but when I don't need to I find I have to re-synchronize everything!

So let's say I want to increase the on-screen duration of slide number 1 by 500 ms and I just want to have a "knock-on" effect where every following slide gets shifted by that same 500 ms value automatically. Is that already possible in 5.0? If so I can't figure out how to do it! If not, I'll request it in the request board.
