  1. ... Am I totally missing what WnSoft has in mind with Styles?

Not all people are keen on spending much time on programming slide shows. An example may be a wedding photographer who wants produce a show based on the images that he produced on some wedding. For situations of that kind an American competitor offers so-called style packs. So the wedding photographer buys the wedding style pack, chooses one of 25 styles, enters captions and images, does some fine tuning, and the show is ready.

  2. I guess the problem I'm having - one of them because I'm having many - is that when I first try to create my style, PTE is suggesting that the number of slides for the beginning (and the end) is -1 (minus 1). I'm no dummy when it comes to mathematics but how can there be -1 slide at the beginning and at the end ...

I think that the entries "-1" show a bug. If you change them to zero you cannot go back to -1.

I have applied your style "Blur-focus-blur2.ptestyle". I could not notice any problems. It creates 2 slides of images that are zoomed and blurred, it works with projects from 7.5, and if I highlight 2 slides on the slide list each of which contains a main image, the slide style will find them.

  3. .. What is wrong with software developers making Slide Styles, but then the practical users taking those styles and suggesting new levels for them ...

In my opinion there isn't anything wrong with the software developers. At present time we are in the early beta phase of the new product. We cannot expect a detailed documentation today. On the other hand: Igor has published an overview and a tutorial. I would recommend people to read them and play a little bit with the given examples (overview, tutorial)

  4. ... all I want to do is, say, change some of the zooms to begin their zoom blurred and come into focus at the end of their zoom. That, to me, is a style ...

A Slide Style is not a kind of macro that you apply to particular objects in a given slide, leaving the given slide more or less as it is. A Slide Style is a (more or less) complete scene, maybe with a special background and other accessories (say) for a wedding presentation. Applying it means: Copying it into your project while exchanging the so-called main images (perhaps not the background and accessories). After insertion you can modify the scenes via O&A. Slide Styles are very similar to the templates that you can buy from Dominique (thedom). In these templates you have to replace the dummy images manually, a kind of work that you can avoid using the Style mechanism.

  5. I think I understand this but I'm obviously doing something wrong... As a next step I created a style that requires 2 images (of the 4 I'll eventually need). But now when I put my 2 images on the timeline as slides, select them and try to apply this style it says that the style needs 2 images, you used one image. Any ideas anyone?

It's difficult to say what may be wrong, if we do not see the project.

  6. ===============

... Maybe I have not understood the concept of Slide Styles ...

Sorry, but it seems to me that your are right. Slide styles are not meant for being applied to existing, nicely programmed slides, say just to modify them a little bit. If you apply a slide style to some existing slides, all image positions and animations in these existing slides will get lost. The existing slides only serve as source for the images in the slide style. A slide style is a generic scene that has been programmed in advance. When applying the style, you feed this generic scene it with a set of images and insert it into your project, not more and not less! I am sorry to say that your proposal does not make sense to me :(

  7. Just a simple example where the new blur function works well, and I have used it quite often in the meantime. It's fine!

The fist image shows a group of small images that moves across the screen. The second image shows the action of a dynamic blur: The group zooms a little bit smaller, and it vanishes by dynamic blur. Sharp edges would kill this effect!

  8. Hi Barry,

I can't be absolutely certain, but I "suspect" the reason for the default being glued is that this is required for linear action which is the default ...

I don't think that this is correct. In the linear situation (IMO) PTE always behaves as if all keypoints were separated, even if some of them are glued. So, I also do not understand the present default settings. On the other hand we might not expect too much. As Igor has pointed out here, the O&A interface will be changed, in particular the rather outdated concept of speed options.

  9. ...

Therefore my question : should a sophisticated product like PTE not also insist on basic functions for basic users?

    ...

    Hi Paul,

I would not regard your proposals as basic. Anyway, it is some time ago (see here) that I made a suggestion about speaker support. Let's hope that a feature of that kind will be implemented, sooner or later.

A remark on color management: At present time you must work out you color management yourself. Open a PTE project, export (copy) it to a new folder. Use XnView (or some other software) for a batch conversion in order to change the color profile of the copied images appropriately (without changing the image names). You obtain an additional version of your project that delivers an executable with a predefined color profile. Again, it would be fine to have a support within the PTE software.

  10. The virtual (tmp) AVI file output has been a part of PTE for as long as I can remember. I don't know if it uses a named pipe or frameserver technology ...

It uses PteVideo.dll ("old code" as Igor says) in the SysWOW64 folder. The virtual video itself does not really exist. The frames are generated by the PTE program. This kind of video has never been meant for being watched or edited, but only for being transcoded. It works well together with VirtualDub or any other program for transcoding that is willing to use the installed PteV-codec.

  11. Sorry, I don't know what the conclusion of this topic should be????

The way the present blur in PTE works has been discussed earlier. It does not produce sharp edges, and I think that it intentionally does not do that.

I must admit that in the earlier topics I myself preferred an Adobe like blur. In the meantime I have learned to love the newly introduced function, in particular in cases where I'm working with animated small pictures. Here, edges of blurred images need to be partially transparent, and I would not like to see a change. OK - in cases of full frame images the background shines through. So it would be fine to have (sooner or later) the blur with sharp edges as an additional function. In the meantime I use some obvious workarounds in these cases.

  12. ...

How can I now make P2E sort my slides in the right chronological order, that is: sorted by date (not the file creation date or file modify date, but the original media creation date as recorded by the camera in the metadata). That way I could just import my photos and videos for for my slideshow and have them already in the right chronological order ...

A simple workaround, maybe not what you want to do: Put copies (not your "originals") of the images that you want to show into a single folder. This is good anyway: If you place the project file of your show into the same folder, PTE will always find the images at later times, even if you have moved the originals. Open this folder in some freeware like XnView (French image viewer), and perform an appropriate batch renaming, e.g. adding running numbers at the beginning of the image names. As sorting criteria choose "Exif Date". The renamed images can easily be placed into PTE showing the order that you want to see.
