  1. The bug in 6.5.7 which causes video output to fail under some copies of XP is still in 6.5.8 but thankfully 7.0 works using the same pte file so that is good news.
  2. I have iTunes on the laptop where the video file functions do not work but not on the desktop where they do! I still suspect a codec problem but where should I look ?
  3. I am failing to get any video output from P2E/VB on my Windows XP laptop though I can make a standard DVD from the P2E projects. The VB operation runs reporting 0 fps and the file produced is zero length. After failing with previous projects, I created a new project with just 2 pictures and set it up according to ronniebootwest's tutorial. Doing the same operation on a new Windows 7 desktop works perfectly so I conclude there is nothing wrong with the downloaded latest version or activation codes. The laptop has Intel core 2 duo T2700 2 Ghz processor, ATI X1600 128Mb graphics, 3Gb memory, fully updated XP. I have Norton 2011 suite but Sonar is switched off and I tried it with AV and Firewall off and there are no relevent reports in its log. I tried removing P2E as I had updated from a previous version and re-installing it. There is plenty disc space. HD files produced on the desktop play OK on the laptop via Quicktime but not Windows Media Player. Is there something missing ?
  4. I found the same problem when I updated from Norton 09 to 10 and it's the Sonar module which thinks any file it does not recognize from its database is suspect. The first P2E exe I tried was quarantined and though I recovered it, as soon as I tried to run it again, it was re-quarantined. The only option is to disable Sonar when you want to work with P2E.
  5. Many AVers use voiceover in their presentations. Some of us have good quality microphones from our analogue days. Usually they have XLR connectors but using a simple XLR to mini-jack adaptor for the computer mic input is generally unsatisfactory. Options include using the XLR inputs of devices such as the Zoom H4 or best of all, a proper mixer. I've just come across a XLR to USB adaptor - the Shure X2U. This is basically a mic pre-amp with gain control and optionally phantom power. A similar device is made by Blue Icicle and is less expensive. I've not tried either but could be a solution, particularly as they can be used with most computers.
  6. All this talk of colour matching makes my head spin too! But can we get back to the original question at the start of the topic plus my recent contribution. Is P2E ignoring the colour calibration when we have ATI graphics cards is the question? If so then all talk of calibration/colour matching is a partial waste of time for the moment. Useful test: run the Nokia test program as normal - ie with calibrated monitor settings. At the main picture hit PrtScrn. Go to Photoshop and import that picture from the clipboard. Save as BMP. Create a new P2E sequence using that picture. Now run it. Is the displayed picture within now the same as from the Nokia program? In my case it is not, the top white is brighter with P2E. It looks therefore that P2E is ignoring the calibration data.
  7. I have followed this thread with great interest since I raised this problem in rather a different form some months ago but with little response. If we use a display calibrator, then I believe the following occurs. 1) the software puts a null or default profile into the driver 2) outputs a series of colours, and measures the display response 3) works out the necessary corrections and puts these as a new profile into the display driver. This means that any picture we have worked on (say in Photoshop) should look the same on any other calibrated system. If we use these in P2E then the same should apply, however it is clear that if we have an ATI card, then the profile is ignored. We need to know definitely if this applies to any other make of display cards. If not then can the author of P2E provide a work-around whenever an ATI card is detected. (For example, read the profile and apply those corrections within P2E)
  8. Thanks Al and Maureen. Just to elaborate. It was just prior to defrag my desktop that I decided to move several P2E files and there was initially no problem as I moved them within their folders from C to D. C is less than 50% used. It was when I tried copying a P2E exe to an external drive on which I keep all the photos and audio that I noticed a problem. Then it was with the files copied to D. I think the delay is due to the AV program having to check what are quite large (>50Mb) P2E exe files. What I can't understand is why that check now takes such a long time compared to previously. Using either computer for normal use shows no problems! Incidentally I used to use AVG but had the same problems as has been reported in this forum so switched to ZoneAlarm when subscription on firewall ran out.
  9. I was tidying up some folders containing P2E files and my computer which was fine up to that point suddenly went on a decided go-slow. I aborted what I was doing, re-booted but still the same problem. Task Manager showed no other task and cpu usage was virtually zero. I abandoned what I was doing and went to my laptop to do something similar and to my surprise there was the same problem! Because the laptop was a slower computer - OK for P2E v4 I watched what was happening: Opening a folder of about a dozen P2E exe's showed them with the default Windows icon, there was much disc activity, then slowly one-by-one the icons changed to the proper ones! When I tried to run one, there was a substantial delay, but when the sequence started it ran at normal speed. I have been in the habit of disabling AV when doing shows so I switched off Zone Alarm Suite (and the internet link). Then all was normal. Going into the settings for Zone Alarm 6.5.737 I found I could disable the scan normally done whenever an exe is executed and that worked. I know that both computers had done a very recent update of AV and spyware files. There always was a very short delay between double clicking the exe and it starting but now it is taking ages if AV is operational. Has anyone else observed this and if so what is the next step? The exe files in question were mainly v4 but I think v5 were also affected. Unfortunatley it is not possible to deduce the version unless PZT effectsd are seen - HINT perhaps authors could include this in the author's notes section of Beechbrook.
  10. I have started using a Spyder device to calibrate my CRT monitor. There is a difference in that pre calibration is brighter and cooler in appearance. When looking at recent V5 PtE sequences I have noticed that just prior to the sequence starting the background white of the folder containing the exe files brightens to the pre-cal state for a fraction of a second. When the sequence ends, the screen reverts to the post cal condition, however if I abort the sequence, the final slide sometimes shows a momentary darkening, though sometimes the screen reverts to the pre-cal status. I have not noticed this with V4 sequences. I am concerned as to whether the new driver in V5 takes into account any screen calibration factors from such as the Spyder or for that matter Adobe Gamma.
  11. For some years I have used a laptop for PtE presentations with a digital projector. The projector is XGA 1024x768 and the laptop also 1024x768 pixels native mode. Pictures are prepared on a desktop with a quality CRT monitor and cropped to 1024x768 before transfer to the laptop. All matched! I now want to replace the laptop with a new up-to-date model particularly for the new options in V5. Most now have wide screens typically 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 pixels. I assume these can be switched to 1024x768 for showing PtE exe's and with the output to the projector just as before. Questions: Is it necessary to switch to XGA for preparing PtE sequences rather than use the native WSXGA? Is it possible to retain the laptop at WSXGA but output to projector at XGA? The high end laptops I am looking at have either ATI Radeon X1600 128Mb or NVIDIA GeForce 7900 256 or 512 Mb but at much higher cost. Is the ATI more than adequate?
  12. Yes I have done this, Harold. It's fine if you only have a handful of slides but if you are dealing with 100+ you run the risk of your click-finger getting RSI. It's is also not easy to keep track of which slide is next and exactly where you are on the timeline (and how much time is left) - a few mistakes and you end up with a lot of shuffling to do. I would like to take my suggestion a step further and be able to set the on-times for a sub-sequence of slides all to the same value with another sub-sequence to a different value thus varying the pace of the transitions for example to better match that of the music.
  13. Excellent pictures. I do like the two consecutive shots of the 3 eagles - 2 adult and 1 youngster. I think the second must be entitiled 'sorry Dad'.
  14. Could I perhaps add a suggested improvement to sync options. Suppose I have created a show, it looks OK so the next stage is to make some titles. The timing for these might be critical so I use the Customize-Slide option to set the timings (and effects) and adjust until it looks right. Then I introduce the soundtrack and in Project_options set synchronize-slideshow-to-music and go to the timeline. If I click on Timed-points, then all the slides default to the same on-time and the timings set earlier are ignored. Yes, I can reset on the time-line but if there are some critical timings later in the sequence, it gets rather messy. The only option here is to use the Excel Adjustor. May I suggest that when yout first go to the timeline under these conditions, the software takes account of any slides with customized timings, adds these timings together, subtracts this from the music time and then allocates what is left over the non-customized slides and then calculates the timings for the timeline taking the customized times and the now default times into account.
  15. I am in the process of scanning slides from slide-based presentations to digital for digital projection. Using a dedicated 35mm scanner (Smartscan 2700), I scan at about 1800 ppi resolution which gives me a reasonable sized image file, then in Photoshop Elements crop to 1024x768 and save as a jpg. I have noticed on some scans (prior to cropping) an interference like patterning in the shadow areas. (It reminds me of Newton rings but there is no colour effect.) Changing the scanning resolution say to 1900 for a re-scan usually seems to do the trick but then other slides will then show the effect. All the slides are in their original plastic mounts, not between glass. I first noticed this effect on a now obsolete HP PhotSmart scanner so I am certain the fault is not with the present scanner. I have not noticed it on a Canon FS4000 but then it is used at higher resolution but is painfully slow. Has anyone else observed this effect and found a way to avoid it?
