I put a show up on Mediafire so friends in Ca. could view it. When they went to the site to retrieve it they hit the wrong thing and dl a bunch of porno stuff. Turn's out right under the "Start Download" area Mediafire is carrying IMO porno ads. Now these were older people, not really into computers or they would have known not to click on an ad. Needless to say they were upset. So am I!!! I like MediaFire and think it's a great service. And I'm by no means a prude. But damnit, that is not the place for those ads!! Can anyone suggest a service like MediaFire? Thanks!

I use www.yousendit.com all the time. Very reliable and effective. Good luck

The problem with Yousendit is that they will only host your uploaded files for 7 days, unless you pay to upgrade the 'Free Account'.

YOU ARE DEALING WITH THE INTERNET

my 12 yr old grandson was standing beside me when i opened my hotmail acct - top of page was a banner ad for a date site -- he got all giggly -- "poppy gonna get a date" -- i had to explain to him what was going on.

one has to be be careful when visiting "normal" sites as well as the sites that offer free services like medifire -they all take advertising dollars

I noticed this the other day and must admit it put me off as well.

The fact is its FREE and they have to make there money by advertising.

There are much better, safer places to store and share your work, but you will have to pay for the service to avoid adverts.

Box net is the one that was recommended to me.

I suppose really you make the choice!

All the Best

Good day All,

Its like Ken said:- If its free they have to make the $$ Dollars somehow...

But if you are interested in a 'Paid-Service' ~ like Neil, I use Boxnet and

here are some shots to show what its all about. they offer many Services.

One way to send large files is to get your own web space. Its not an expensive thing to do to gain some storage on line although I have not researched this recently. As long as your band width traffic is not high it used to be reasonably cheap. Even if you don't want to create a web site, you can use the space for file transfer.

Upload your slide show and give the link to whoever you want to download it.

The web space people will create a link address and you would put /myslideshow.zip on the end of it.

Thats what I did recently with that Robin sound effect as shown below.

Bob in this commercial/capitalist, (sorry I don't mean to be political just realist), world you get what you pay for. If it's free well expect the unexpected.

But remember you are using the Internet and it is impossible to be 100% secure. All care but no responsibly would appear to be the motto on the NET.

Hi Bob,

I've used MediaFire for some time and have not encountered your friend's experience.....perhaps you could point out for us where specifically "right under the "Start Download" area" the porno ad is?

The "Scan your own computer for viruses" links to a malware scanning site....didn't find any porno there. Porno ads of course can sneak in from a lot of sources, other than a specific domain. Since you've raised my concern about MediaFire, I wonder if you've experienced the porno ad from MediaFire first hand on your PC?

Thanks in advance for sharing, and the warning.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim, I'm not at home computer for a couple days. When I get home I'll do a screen capture and try and post it. I like MediaFire and I am using the free service so I understand nothing is free. But I can't have these type of ads showing up on a service I use to have other people see my work. So I think I'll sign up for the paying service part. I think I read these would not have ads. I just think it a shame how porno is so freely distributed. If a person wants that kind of stuff, that's not my concern. But it's everywhere now. And that ruins the quallity of the product!! IMO!!

Yes Bob, that sure would be strange that PCMag reviewed it in Aug '07 and ranked it as one of their favorite new sites....and no mention of porn:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2175099,00.asp

You can also find many other file hosting review sites, where no other users have ever mentioned that they found porn on MediaFire, such as:

http://www.filehostingreview.com/review/728/MediaFire.html

I'm inclined to believe that the porn on your friend's PC was picked up some other way, until you can share with us the specifics.

However, I do find the 100mb file limit at MediaFire somewhat limiting, so if there are any other PTE users that care to share their favorite file hosting sites that have better features, I would sure like to hear from them.

Cheers,

Jim

ps. I have no interests in MediaFire, other than being a somewhat satisfied user.

the freebie sites generally limited to 100 mb

the thing mediafire has going for it is unlimited time

they have popups but if you have a popup blocker

i spent +- 3 hrs there today checking my uploads and had the odd blank popup

Sorry, that was my poor attempt at humor. I meant the porno not MediaFire!

When I went to check after hearing from them there were porno ads on the site. Maybe porno is a bit strong. How about nudie ads? The ads changed to other types but the offensive ones where there. My friends are even older then I am and I doubt they would have that type of stuff on their computer. I do like MediaFire as I stated. It's easy to use and plenty of storage for me at this point. So I guess I'll just upgrade to their better sevice
