  1. Tony some interesting comments on a perennial subject among camera club members, (and others).

As someone who has both entered competitions and judged them I must agree that some judges do tend to let their likes and dislikes effect their judgements. I have found the better judges are the ones who are aware of this and take it into account, but as they are only human it is not always possible.

The assessment of an image is done in two major areas, Technical and Aesthetic.

The technical area, sharpness, correct colour, exposure, focus, etc is usually straight forward and can be one where there is general agreement. On the other hand the aesthetic area has been, is and always will be one of great debate, the basics, "rule of thirds", framing, etc can be recognised and accessed with general agreement but when we get to the "emotional" side of the subject our own feelings come into play and this is where the debate rages. Even the mood a judge is in, if have they had a good/bad day, will effect their opinion here. The best I feel we can do is gather as wide a range of opinions of our work as possible and this will tend to filter out the likes/dislikes of the individual.

When judging 3 or 4 images or 1 AV, (as here on this forum), a points system is not required in my opinion but when judging 50-100 images or more than 5-6 AVs the only way they can be assessed against each other, (or to a consistent standard), is a points system of some sort with all its faults, even the relative merit of various points systems is a subject of debate. Looking at a large number of shows can take several days and the only way of maintaining any consistency is a form of awarding points to each. Also they can be a form of shorthand for the judge to refer to at a later date or when presenting the results. If the break-down of points is passed on to the author they can often be a useful guide for improvement to their work.

An interesting document, attached is a sheet that was given to us, (I was on a panel of 5), to judge a AV competition earlier this year. It appears to be an updated version of yours.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying in the context of competition. However, the A-V world to me is one where we are all winners from the point of view that we are able to share each others' work and enjoy the results.

I think Andrew was suggesting that a standard be adopted on the forum for "judging" sequences on a points basis. This in effect makes the forum a competition site and not just one where shows can be shared without prejudice. As a result of this I feel there would be fewer contributors and therefore we would all lose out.

If there are those who wish to compete and do so from the outset, then there is a requirement for a set of "rules" to work by. This then makes the playing field level, however, I do not think the forum is the best place. Just my opinion.

  2. Hi Andrew,

I tend to be with the folk who are saying no need for a marking scheme. I am a member of a local camera club and enter competitions only for the sake of contributing to the evening. The "winner" is only the opinion of the judge and those who have entered competitions will vouch for the inconsistency in judging between individuals. If you enter a competition you need to adopt the philosophy that if the judge likes your photograph ( and this tends to be based on impact and also subjects which are close to the heart of the judge) you may win, if not it doesn't mean that what you have presented is no good.

However, as a relative newcomer I am keen to learn and make sequences which are photographically, technically and artistically improving as I go along. To do this I watch the shows that others have produced and if there is something I can relate to I will try and incorporate it into my own shows. I feel the forum is an excellent way of sharing both shows and views and, as long as this is done in a Gentlemanly or Ladylike way, we all gain from each other.

Scoring points, or not as the case may be, can be discouraging and I think we all need encouragement if we are to progress. Continue to make constructive comments when authors request them otherwise just enjoy what is offered.

Just for interest I have attached a "Marking Sheet" I came across on the net previously, however I am not sure of its origin so offer it as is.

    Thanks to all

  3. It's been nearly 40 years now since I came out of the jungles of Vietnam after two years of fierce fighting - many friends and brothers-in-arms didn't come back with me. Each year I remember those who were left behind, friend and foe alike, and wonder about the senselessness of it all as I see it repeated time and again.

This is just my way of remembering, not just my war but all wars - not pretty but necessary.....

    Hi Lin,

Thank you for the reminder that there are no winners in war. A moving experience to watch.

  4. Dear friends,

If you have own website, please help us promote PicturesToExe and put the next text with a link.

    1) Please define a page on your website where you want to place a link to our website.

    2) Insert our HTML code (choose one variant below) into your HTML code. Please don't change highlighted text and address of the link ("photo slide show" and "DVD slide show"), only modify text description around this link as you prefer.

Please post a reply in this topic and let us know address of you webpage where you added our link. It will help new people learn about PicturesToExe. Thanks in advance!

    Make the <a href="http://www.wnsoft.com/" target="_blank">photo slide show</a> with PicturesToExe.

PicturesToExe will help you create <a href="http://www.wnsoft.com/" target="_blank">DVD slide show</a> from your photos.

    Hi Igor,

Please find a link from my website at www.tcdigitalphotography.co.uk

Many thanks for all your hard work

  5. Hi Tony,

If the first slide in the show is an actual image and you give it a transition, say fade in, then when you run the show, you should get a black screen which then fades into the first image. Mind I have no wallpaper or screen saver on my computer which might change things a bit.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. I can use the effects to get the transition between slides but I have seen a number of sequences which when started appear to fade into the first slide directly from the computer desktop image. In the main shows tend to snap to a black slide (or whatever background colour has been set) and then fade into the first image.

An example of what I am trying to do is on Beechbrook and is entitled "Where Love Is" and I haven't been able to find out how to achieve this.

  6. Hi Tony,

Probably a good idea to download and read the PTE User Guide at the top of this forum.

To get zero opacity you simply go to the Objects and Animations screen, highlight the object you wish to make zero opacity then click on the animations tab and type in a zero for the opacity number.

If you do this with the first keypoint highlighted the opacity will stay at zero for that object. If you want to change the opacity somewhere later but keep opacity at 100% before that time, it will take an additional keypoint to hold the 100% opacity and a third to change it from that keypoint time to zero.

    Best regards,

    Lin

    Hi Lin,

Thanks for the reply. I will have a look at that and read the manual!!!!

  7. A question from a forum member prompted me to write this brief reminder. If you have the need to automate running several of your slideshows sequentially from a CD or from the computer in a sequence without intervention from the user you probably realize that this can be done by simply setting the last slide in each show to run the next program in sort of a "daisy chain" sequence, but what if you would like to do this without having each executable be encumbered with a code which runs some other file? Perhaps you would like to use these executable files without having to modify each to fit a particular purpose or one-time use??

    The use the "invisible menu".

This is easily done by taking advantage of the fact that PicturesToExe can make any object or slide invisible by setting the opacity to zero. So how can this be used to create the scenario above? Just create a brief executable file containing a few "invisible" slides (set opacity to zero). Set the time to a couple seconds or so for each invisible slide, set the effect to "quick, no transition," and set the slides to run an external progam which would be the slidshows you wish to sequence, etc.

This "invisible menu" then runs the first invisible slide, executes the desired program, returns invisibly and runs the second invisible slide which in turn calls the next desired program, etc. Thus you have circumvented modifying each slideshow with a slide which calls another show and eliminate the need to make changes to several slideshows.

    Lots of possibilities here folks!

    Best regards,

    Lin

    Hi Lin,

Sorry to be a bit thick, but how do I get the opacity to zero in pxe?
