What would be ideal would be to capture still images of each continent with the lighting, then overlay the lights as a PNG and turn them on and off via opacity keyframes. That way both the rotation "and" night lighting would be available. Perhaps if I turn off the atmosphere and clouds and leave the nightlights, I might capture stills of various positions of the Earth's rotation, make PNG transparencies and overlay these. There would be a bit of work because one would want the atmosphere to not be occluded by the PNG overlays so they would need to have transparency where the image is black between lights. Of course that presents yet another problem because without the black for contrast, the lighting of cities across continents would not be nearly as dramatic. Not an easy thing to accomplish if you want to keep the rotation of the Earth.

Thank you for your detailed explanations.
Concerning the earth and the night/day cycle, in Celestia it is easy to obtain it by using the "Synchron Orbit" feature in the Navigation Menu ("Y" keyboard shortcut).
You can even adjust prealably exactly where you will fix the center on earth with the right mouse button.
More, it is possible to add the night lights on earth (Menu Rendition (?) Options).
If the moving stars in the sky is an issue with the "Synchron Orbit", there must be a possibility to play with occulting PNG overlays in PTE.
... but perhaps I see the things a litlle bit too simply or I didn't understand exacly what you have done.

I didn't see your other versions.
I find it funny but too long.
You have choosen a static sun point of view.
I think that it would be much prettier if you choose an other point of view (or vary the point of view) so that we can see the night/day variations on the earth and the moon in other situations than in the full moon view which gives it a sad flat perception (the earth instead, keeps a good 3D feeling).
What program do you use for the astronomical scene?

Thank you for taking time to comment.
During the last months, important changes in my job, kept me temporarily distant from my hobbies.
Concerning the photos ... they are really not so good. The weather and my relative disinterest to architecture and town photos apart, I tooked with me a pocket camera as I wanted to visit the town, hands in the pockets, without any bag.
The jerky start and finish of the pans and zooms are for the moment a big deal for me as it is not very intuitive to handle these options and it is far from being easy to get something smooth!
For instance, I am totally unable to end properly the path of an object that crosses a photo while zooming out (the plane in the first slide) : at the far end of it's path, the dynamic of the movement and zoom changes slightly but very visibly so that I had to find an artifice to hide it.

Here you will find a slideshow (6'14" / 60 Mo) I created after a 3 days stay in Berlin.
I took with me an "old" but very pratical tiny pocket camera (Canon Ixus 850 IS) just as a sort of photo notebook.
The weather was greyish and very cold (- 10°C) so that, combined with my camera capacities and my poor interest in urban photography, I collected a few photos of weak quality.
My first intention was not to combine them in a slideshow but, as I listened to Lana del Ray's voice, I was mentally thinking about Berlin, Marlène Dietrich and my photos.
I had then the idea to create a little chronological notebook with the help of external ressources (satellite photos, 3D aerial photos, night photos of Christopher Kyba, etc.)
Such a notebook has of course many limits making it foremost suited for a very restricted use and circle (family and friends): image associations that can be confusing, illogical or not self explanatory, redundancies, some very poor quality photos, long (or too short) lasting slides, etc.
Despite of all these limits, I took much pleasure to do this slideshow ... probably that the sensual voice of Lana del Ray did its job!

The feature is still available in v7 Betas. The Project Options tabs and their feature assignments have been partially reworked/changed as compared to previous versions.
Look in Main tab very bottom for the icon assignment option.

How change the exe icon of slideshows made with PTE 7.0 beta 13 ?
I have installed the latest beta version of PTE (7.0 beta 13).
I have searched in the forum if there is a possibility to change the default icon for exe PTE slideshows but I failed to either because I didn't correctly search or because it is no more possible to change the icon within the program.
Have somebody an answer to this vital question?

When I play the Brugge slideshow, a black window, which has a title of 'Brugge 60fps', pops up first for a second or so. Then the show starts. And, during the show, if I press the Pause button, the show pauses, but it will not continue playing if I hit the Pause button again. It freezes and I have to hit the ESC button, where the black window pops up again.
Can you tell me what might be causing this? Is this happening to anyone else?

Hiting Pause stops the slideshow but it continues if I hit the spacebar (not instantaneously)

As for Mickp, I find Brugge a town that history and architecture inspires much more color, joy, life, creativness than darkness and sadness.
In that optic, black and white is perhaps not the best choice.
The picture with the postcard stands is from my point of view not appropriate as for the viamichelin modern shaped introduction map.
The two color shots are also a bit curious because they don't appeal something very particular.

I liked the show, and the presentation. I think you visited Stockholm during the Easter. We had wery good wheather that period. I think the best time in Stockholm is summer and i can recomend a visit in the arkipelag.

We actually stayed in Sweden during the Easter week.
Blue skye all the stay apart one day !
Temperatures were apparently (min 4°C to 16°C maxi) high as we often were the sole guests in the restaurants to eat inside while the locals all sat on the terrace tables (with blankets in the evening)
The following week there was a day with 2 hours of falling snow that melt in one hour

I had a problem with the second music extract. How to be sure with a so distant language for me to be sure the text is not too ...hot!
For example, for the title, the web translation robot gives "the tongue of love"... I suppose that "the language of love" is probably more correct;

I didn't know that it was possible to reduce the video "bumps" during post proccessing. I will give it a try.
The weather was absolutely extraordinary for the whole week: no clouds and very "hot" day temperatures (15°C) for that region... very uncommon for mid April !

Hej / 65MB - 4'35" on Bill's Beechbrook site
Hej (pronounced "hey" and meaning "hello") is the very first swedish word you hear at your arrival in Sweden... You will then hear it many times and rapidly say it yourself during your stay there.
In the first part of the slideshow you will find some photos of Stockholm.
In the second part there are photos of what is the second thing that will surely impress you after the "Hej" (...and the friendliness of the swedish) : the wooden houses, very often red brownish colored, with there white corners.
To be honest, some shots were taken in 2 open air museums (Skansen in Stockholm and Gamla Stan in Linköping) but there 2 or 3 century houses are very close to what you find nowadays!
I used the last beta version of PTE because I wanted to incorporate 2 little videos.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful show of a beautiful area. The photos were top notch and the music was perfect. I especially liked one photo in particular -- the one with the church in the lower right corner completely dwarfed by the towering mountains. Outstanding job and I thoroughly enjoyed the show!
I am happy you enjoyed my slideshow.
Concerning the particular photo of the church, it is the St Johann church in the Villnöss (Funes) valley with the Geislerspitzen in the background.
It is one of the most scenic valley of the Dolomites and probably one of the most known and photographed church amongst the Dolomites lovers!
It is a bit difficult to reach as the valley is very isolated but it is an absolute stunning sight!
After the remark of Ken Cox (aerial shot), I remembered a superb video released by the south tyrolean official web site. I found it again here (the video is on the left side, middle page.).
From my point of view, there last year video is much better (less commercial). You will

Thank you to all for your kind remarks. We had chance that weather was remarkably good... only 2 days of episodic rainstorms during our 2 weeks stay.
Ken, no aerial shots but each time we go there, I am thinking about a fly over but there are 2 problems: first, airfields are very sparse so that going there can take a lot of time and secondly, when weather is favorable, I prefer hiking!

Point of no return / 36 Mo / 5'9" on Beechbrook (thank you to Bill)
Here a few shots I took in the austrian and italian Alps (Lermoos, Zugspitz area and Val Gardena, Dolomiti).
Why Point of no return? This is the title of the piece of music that has inspired me for this slideshow but it is also what often happens when hiking in the mountains: a point on the track, on which going back would be longer or more difficult than continuing forward.

A randomly chosen sequence of images of young women in typical poses with a musical background imperfectly synchronized. Maybe a nice presentation for people who like to see undressed female humans. Stopped it before it reached the final slide

Substitute the girls with sunflowers or apples or any vegetables, and those crying for non art will probably suddenly change there mind

I am not sure I have understood what was the goal of our slideshow, if there is one.
- If it was a sort of exercise to try and test some special effects, then, for sure, some are nice and interesting. Bravo!
- If it was to tell a story, then I have some difficulties to understand it and follow your demonstration.
- If it was just to show some interesting photos with a moody music, then, effectively, some shots are very nice, others are not.
Are the majority, some ore none photo yours? I recognized a superb moody photo entitled "The Road Goes Ever On & On" by it's author (Gary McParland).
Whatever you wanted to show or tell us, just a point that I found curious: all the women are in white, apart one. Is it a particular message?
