First Timer: ideal picture size for video

Hi guys,

I would like to try the video output feature for the first time but I have a very basic question: what is the ideal pixel quantity for each video quality?

For instance, if I plan on using HD720, is 720 pixel enough? I have my photos on LR catalogs and shot at 14MP (4288 x 2848) and these files are huge, and I can easily export them at 720 pixel. Would the result be the same? Is this a good idea or am I missing something important?

Is there any good guides explaining how to prepare photos and what is the ideal resolution for each video type?

Thanks in advance,

BB

Hi BB, When I started using PTE in 2007, 1024x768 was the common slide size used to give a reasonable sized exe file & good picture quality & suitable for 4x3 CRT TV's & monitors. You could take a look here http://www.picturestoexe.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10609

then decide. However the larger slide size needs more handling power from your hardware, particularly if you are using complicated animation.

Yes, you are missing something. Make your slide shows at a higher resolution than 720. The two formats you may want to look at are 1920*1080 (HD size) or 1920*1200 (many moderm monitors run at this format) The reason is that you can always reduce the size of your slide show for any other projects, but once you make a slide show at 720 pixels your stuck with that rather small size.

Its like setting the quality option on your camera low because you only need low res images for a particular project. Once shot, your stuck with low res images. Shoot the images as high a resultion as you can, because you can always downsize but not upsize..Same with slide shows

For example, If you made your show at 1920*1080 and a little later started dabbling in Blue Ray disks or DVD's for modern TV's. Then you will be well set for all eventualities.

I have a tutorial slide show on my web site, that might help a little. Its the 6th one down on the page below, called image size

1920x1080 for most purposes including MPEG4 and PAL DVDs.

Remember to UNTICK Fixed Size of Slide when making a PAL DVD and the images will "Fit To Screen" in the correct AR on HD TVs.

For the "ultimate" quality on your own TV use a Laptop/PC connected via HDMI to play the EXE or (if your TV supports it) use a USB memory key to play the MPEG4.
