Hi All,

Following on from Ken's recommendation may I also suggest that you give "Foto-Filtre" a trial run.

This relatively unknown program is a classic in its own rite and it offers a unique range of Tools

which other expensive 'Pro-Programs' simply omit. Apart from its superb rendition qualities it can

also handle Images in excess of >16.Mb in size which other Editors simply choke on.

Here 'attached' is an edited Snapshot of its Main-Page and a Link to a secure Download-site.

The site also publishes 67 Reviews of the Program. (Interactive downloadable Tutorial attached).

GIMP 2.6.11

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Definitely not a K.I.S.S. program. Similar to Photoshop but free, with a steep learning curve. Does all adjustments, uses layers and imports and exports Photoshop PDF files. Huge number of filters, brushes etc. I don't find it as intuitive as Photoshop but I first learned Photoshop and sometimes it's difficult to think in a different way.

Hi All

What about Google Picasa? http://picasa.google.com/

Its easy to use, has got some good tools, outputs in jpg which is fine for PTE, it catalogues your images and best of all its free!

While it is good, its nowhere near as good as Photoshop CS5, but as Ken say's Photoshop comes at a high price and learning curve.

John

A consideration, not mentioned so far, would be that the application chosen needs to have a fully featured RAW Converter - preferably one which allows for recognition of in-camera settings - and also allow for those in-camera settings to be changed retrospectively.

UPGRADE FROM $120 USA FUNDS

now boys and girls lets not scare this person off photography completely - when all he did was ask for a program to improve his digital pictures -- which may not even need improving :D

IMHO he is a newbie and wants to learn otherwise he would not have asked in the first place

The first basic step when adjusting your digital images is to adjust the Levels. This makes sure that the black really is black (R,G,B = 0,0,0) and the white really is white (255,255,255). Once we know what software you are using we may be able to offer more specific advice.

Someone might be able to download it - I can't.

Follow Peter's suggestion above. Open LEVELS and drag the black slider (Left) in until it touches the graph/curve.

Drag the white slider (right) in until it touches the graph/curve. It should then look a lot better.

You could do this easily in Igor's (FREE) PIXBUILDER - download from main page.

Once you have that someone can give you simple instructions.

That looks like an air-to-ground photograph. Therefore you will have had additional problems at the time of taking it:

- shooting through the window of the aircraft

- possibly high vibration levels

- hazy atmosphere causing the light to be scattered (diffused)

If the platform was a micro-light then no windows but add in some wind buffeting. If it was a hot air ballon then no windows and no vibration.

The software that drives a modern digital camera's multi-segment light-meter system is designed to expect the ground to be at the bottom and the sky at the top. When this is not the case it might then mis-read the situation and try and make the upper half of the picture conform to its idea of the correct exposure for sky. If the upper half contains land (darker in general than sky) the end result will be an over-exposed image - which is what we have here.

When shooting air-to-ground it is often a good idea to programme in at least half a stop of under-exposure. Here, with a hazy atmosphere, I would have tried one stop of under-exposure at taking time.

regards,

Peter

This looks like a picture from an aeroplane & possibly through glass. However I have enhanced it in NX2, but I think red riding hood may be having a laugh as she appears to know more than she admits.

Yachtsman1. B)

PS the second version was resized & edited using NX2 Auto setting.
