Having worked in the engineering field for over 35 years I was never a fan of "shave and pave". It is a way to save money but unfortunately, in my experience, the cracks end up reflecting through in about 3 years, especially in colder climates. More expensive, but I always liked to see the existing asphalt removed to the gravel base. Love your neighborhood with all the mature trees.
