Large Shows and Downloads

With the increasing popularity of PTE and the wonderful slide shows it is capable of producing, there are probably hundreds of shows that never see the light of day because of thier physical size. Those of you with a dial up connection (internet) will know what I mean when I say that it takes forever to download a show to your computer. If you have a broadband connection, then things are much better, but how many can afford that luxury?

Even for the lucky ones with broadband, downloading a large PTE show can be tiresome. I have considered uploading a show to my own web site, but am reluctant to do so because of space and bandwidth restriction.

Can someone answer this question for me - How long will it take to download a 60mb file for someone with a 1mb Broadband connection?

I can't give you an exact answer, but I can give you a naive calculation:

60Mbytes = 560Mbits, therefore it will take 560 seconds over a 1 Mbps (bits per second) link.

However, this wrongly assumes that there is no protocol overhead in transferring the file and that you have effectively a 1 Mbps connection to the host, of course you're sharing your portion of the Internet with many others - so I'd pull a number out of the air and expect 20-40 minutes.

i dont think you can put a number on your question -- it all depends on the net traffic at the moment

put it up on your site and i will download it

just using #'s - - forget the values of the #'s

my dsl optimum conditions

i can upload at 400 max

hawk is on cable and he can upload 600 max to me

download from MS or some of the French members p2e sites is 1800 max

i am downloading 100 to 200 --all the supply is giving me

uploading at present at 350 to 400 -- my max

i used this site for an test example -- it is a fast server

http://www.digiscopie.com/index.php?a=diaporama

tho it was 6+ mb file the screen shots show what it took

i then had 2 files downloading at once same site and i did a shot of my dumeter -- it looks like the max from that site is 1250+-

so put up a big file to test on

The good thing for us here in the UK is that the price of Broadband is dropping enormously. I was paying £14.99 for my dial-up account and have just changed to Broadband at £17.99 (It stays at £14.99 for three months). I had previously been told that my line would not support Broadband but some BT engineers came along and everything is working.

One of the first things that I did last week when I was connected was to download some of the larger PTE slideshows that people have made available. It is embarrassing! I thought that mine were quite good until I saw the amazing results that other people produce. Perhaps dial-up is not so bad after all! :)

I am on Cable with a combined TV, Telephone and Broadband connection. My Broadband is 2 Mb and well worth it as I check the Forum on a regular basis and I do not have to worry about any extra costs. The sequences I download from the Beechbrook site vary in their download times but it is usually only a few minutes and I can always switch to doing other things on my computer while they are taking place. I don't consider Broad band a luxury but a necessity if you are to enjoy PTE and the Forum to the full.

here is a screenshot of another test

file was 39 mb+-

it was downloaded in +- 71/2 mins

as can be seen the download rate was very unstable

so no matter how hi you can xfer if the feed is not there you are not going to get it as fast as you would like

a few months back we ran tests downloading the p2e program from the USA server and from Guido's i believe

times were not equal

My little experience today : it was the same speed 133 Ko/s to download from Cottage and from http://www.digiscopie.com/index.php?a=diaporama which is in Belgium . (Nathalie, the bird's specialist, administrator of Diapositif , lives in Belgium ).

But today is a special day ....

Usualy, the times are different .

But, as Ron, I think that I can do other thing during thid operation ... and that Broadband is a necesity !!!

The very big problem is to upload a large PTE  ... but they say that it will change soon !

To try and get a measure of what the download times might be, I have now uploaded a large 56mb PTE show to my web site. It runs on a monitor resolution of 1024x768. Perhaps you people with broadband will download it and let me know how long it takes. When you log on to my site, go to the 'Downloads' page and you will see it.

From the other site of the pond Holland, download time about 6 min-10 sec. speed 163 KB/sec.

On my line - 1.1 Mbps, it took a few seconds under 8 minutes.

Playback was perfect. Exceptional clarity in each image. Recognised all but a couple of the places.

I don't think the download size is such an issue any more, not with regard to how long it takes. I would just start the download and let it continue working in the background, whats the rush.

Alternatively hit the download when you don't need the PC.

The issue is bandwidth and making sure you don't get unexpected bills from your web space provider.

One I was with was very cheap for the space, but bandwidth was like gold dust.

The below text is from http://www.dallasbay.net/journal/journal.php.

Justin, The two sites involved drew 85,000 visitors in about 2 1/2 days. I'm stuck with over $3,000.00 in over limit bills from my server owner (Rapidsite). This has become a nightmare. I'm disabled and this money will have to come out of our life savings. I only sent the site to a few friends (now ex-friends) who sent to everyone in the whole world. I've never heard of such a thing happening. Needless to say, the sites no longer exist.

I did find out a lot about the incident though. The boat is the MV Cahaba owned by Warrior and Gulf Navigation of Mobile, AL. The pictures were taken by an amateur photgrapher named Barger. This happened in April, 1979 at Demopolis, AL on the Warrior River. Nobody was seriously injured and the boat continued to it's destination with the barges. To my knowledge, the boat is still in service. The bridge has since been replaced.
