Computer problems after downloading/registering

I'm DESPERATE!

Please tell me if you've ever heard of this.

Shortly after downloading the latest version of pic2exe on my computer, I started having issues. When I do a system restore back to before I had the program, my computer is fine again. But the following issues keep recurring and I have to CONTINUE to do a system restore:

While online, I input a wesite url in the address line; I hit enter; NOTHING happens except that the address stays highlighted. If I use a site from FAVORITES, it's fine. Just as long as I don't have to hit enter!

And ALSO...I now can't open any documents in WORD! (!!!???)

I have a brand new computer...PC...2 months old.

Any settings or something I don't know about??? Anyone else have any issues like this?

Okay...NEVER MIND...

Microsoft's newest updates are BAD BAD BAD...

Just google vercslid.exe!!!

It wasn't pic2exe at all...

I had hundreds of .exe's in my computer, working, creating havoc.

If anyone is experiencing issues with your pc this week, that's why.

Just a conincidence that I downloaded pic2exe and had a microsoft update nearly the same hour.

experiencing from one of the Microsoft Update patches released last week. -

On April 11, Microsoft released a security update via Automatic Updates and

the Microsoft Update site to fix some security issues. See

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908531/. This update applies to Windows

2000, SBS systems, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

Subsequent to this fix, many users have reported various problems in Windows

Explorer and also with Internet Explorer, as well as other programs and

functions. Many examples can be seen in the MS public newsgroups (and likely

elsewhere). Examples are cited in the new Microsoft Knowledge Base article

(15 April 2006) "Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you

install security update MS06-015" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165)

and in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015

revised on 15 April.

* Unable to access special folders like "My Documents" or "My Pictures."

* Microsoft Office applications may stop responding when you attempt to save

or open Office files in the "My Documents" folder.

* Office files in the "My Documents" folder are not able to open in

Microsoft Office.

* Opening a file through an application's File / Open menu causes the

program to stop responding.

* Typing an address into Internet Explorer's address bar has no effect.

* Right-clicking on a file and selecting Send To has no effect.

* Clicking on the plus (+) sign beside a folder in Windows Explorer has no

effect.

* Some third-party applications stop responding when opening or saving data

in the "My Documents" folder.

Here are some suggestions if your Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer is

having severe issues:

1. Be sure to review the articles noted above.

2. If you have HP external devices or HP photo software as per 918615, AND

you still have the update 908531 on the system:

do not try to do the registry edit by yourself.

a. Follow the article's tips.

b. If you have Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software, then I'd suggest you

apply **Freudi's registry patch**

(http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip). (Thanks to

Ottmar Freudenberger!) Download, extract from the .ZIP file, and afterwards

double-click the contained .REG file. Let it import into the registry. Then

logoff and restart Windows. See if it is working better.

3. If still stuck with a non-functional Internet Explorer or a serious issue

with normal Windows functions, (and you have reviewed the MS articles

previously noted) , then consider using Control Panel's Add or Remove

programs, and remove update for 908351. To remove windows update KB908531,

do the following:

Go to Control Panel, then select "Add or Remove Programs."

Be sure the "Change or Remove Programs" is active / highlighted (at top left

of window).

Then look at "Show updates" checkbox (at top). Make sure it is selected

(ticked).

Once the display is populated, scroll down to "Security Update for Windows

XP (KB908531)." It should be near the bottom of the list.

Click on that item. You'll see a Remove button. Click on it if you wish to

have it removed.

Before you use Add-Remove Programs, be very sure you close all your open

user programs (after saving any unsaved work). After this change takes

effect, and IF this does not ask for a restart, then you should do a logoff

and restart of Windows.

ALSO: Tweak your settings for Automatic Updates. I'd advise, if you are

using automatic updates, you configure it to "Notify me but don't

automatically download or install them." Do not have it on "full auto." To

get to your settings, right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop,

select Properties, then click on the Automatic Updates tab. See also: "How

Thanks Teri for posting your finding. I have not read the googled info yet, but I have indeed had pc problems the last two days. Sometimes the IE browser address line was absolutely dead. Two of four pc's in the house were slow as molasses on the internet. Today, I tried to "clean-up" one pc to see if I could speed things up a bit. My clean-up did seem to gain back some internet speed but now I am getting a message saying that I have made such substantial change in my hardware that I have to activate my XP Home operating system within 3 days! I have made no hardware change as far as I know. I would be interested how many other users have had problems in last couple of days. Maybe this is additional incentive to give Firefox a try and let IE at least do it's coughing not in my face.

I've been using Firefox for over 6 months now and have never had any problems. It also has a couple features that I like better than IE, especially "Tabs". You have several sites open at the same time without having to start a new browser session.

The only problem that I've encountered is that some times (mostly on Microsoft sites) you have to access the info you're looking for with IE. That's a rare occurance.

Try it, you'll like it.

Has this problem with the Microsoft updates been resolved yet?

I am having problems with Internet Explorer myself and would like to know if there is a definite course of action that I should take now. I have read the advice posted by Ken Cox - is that what I should do???

Recently within the past 10 day's there have been a 'few nasties' floating around the Internet which prompted Microsoft and Norton and Spybot and Microsoft Defender to issue "emergency patches" which is quite out of character for these Corporations as they usually issue upgrades on scheduled dates !

I hate to say this, but these points to a 'Trojan/Coolweb Multiplication Infection' (possibly the new Banker infection) which hits BHO Helper Objects within the Google Search Page and then migrates into the PC. This may be the cause of your problems ~ and that's a likely may-be !

May I ask, what 'Anti-Virus Software' are you running ? and when was it last updated ? and has the PC been scanned for the newer 'Coolwebsearch Infections ? I say this with the best of intentions before you are driven to doing something 'rash' with the real possibility of damaging your 'New Operating System'
