Advice to Leonard

Hi Leonard

I contacted you personally to help you,

I told you about the four groups who all meet within an hour of your home.

When I last heard from you, you were going to attend some of the meetings. Guess you wanted a chauffeur and individual tuition too as you didn't attend any! ;)

Since we exchanged e-mails I've held or attended four meetings in your area, including a very detailed and informative workshop on PTE 5. We who live in this area are extremely fortunate that we do have so many active demonstrations of PTE and all its new features. We have many people who are using and happily exchanging information & ideas about PTE within a short distance of one another while others are prepared to drive for hours to attend the meetings we have available.

Many PTE users in other areas live many miles from any other Group and rely on this excellent Forum to help one another. :) However instead of the personal touch you Leonard apparently prefer paperwork. or rather pdf files. :(

If you want to really learn and grow beyond classing yourself as "a novice", you would be better meeting others who will willingly help you. The next AV Group meeting in your area is at Trowbridge – not very far from Bath - when WAVES will be holding a meeting on Saturday February 10th – More info here

The next day there will be a meeting around the corner from you, at the RPS HQ (map of venue on the RPS Western region web site here ) when Ian Bateman FRPS will be doing a lecture on digital AV - he's the UK's top digital AV specialist so I would highly recommend you go along. 11 February - AV by Ian Bateman FRPS

Then a week later there's the only UK hosting of the 321 International Digital AV Competition at Aldbourne – only 45 minutes away from you, A great chance to view top quality work from all over the world and all the sequences will be under 3minutes 21 seconds. What better opportunity to mix with other PTE users and learn AV techniques.

But you are truly obsessed with pdf files.

a 'user guide' or 'manual' that you can read and re-read to absorb the basic principles before venturing into the unknown.

You seem under the impression that Pictures to Exe has never supplied such a thing. :o

Well prior to the very rapid upgrades we have been having free from Igor and his team, as they worked steadily to develop all the new stages leading up to PTE 5, there was a very comprehensive help file, which did include a manual. I only ever saw one person who had gone to all the trouble to print it all off and it was very long and extremely comprehensive. :)

Given the speed with which PTE was upgraded this help file soon needed to be constantly changed and so that aspect of the programme was left while the team concentrated on what the users requested. This is the only software programme I know of, whose development has been led by what the users ask for (and receive). Maybe if you had placed a polite request for a new pdf manual in "the wish list" you would be looking forward to reading it when the next full version is released.

Following your request for this "manual" I will search through all my old copies of the many versions of PTE I have saved and send these help files to you so that you can spend the next few months happily printing them off. I am sure that the vast majority of PTE beginners find it easier to learn by trying out the features which Igor and his team have always strived to make so easy and user friendly.

I will also send you the six tutorial files which Wnsoft supplied, ……March 25, 2005

……..

New official tutorial for PicturesToExe is available now. Overall size of 6 lessons is 7 MB.

But I know you hate links so I will send them to you soon.

As a novice you may of course wish to receive some sound tuitorials for novices too :

Not forgetting the many image editing tuitorials for novices to help improve or process digital photographs. I think I had better start sending you the e-mails now - you have a very busy time ahead……………………..

As a beginner to AV ……

….

As a fellow novice

your quote to Sharon,

although I am intrigued how you can refer to yourself as a novice at 4.28 on January 29th and by 8.30pm on January 30th you quote

I have no problem with P2E
…..

and you are suddenly

computer hardware/software savvy with over 20 years experience.

Quote …

For the last few months I have endeavoured to put myself in the position of the newbie

Sorry there is absolutely NO WAY you could do that, unless you suddenly developed amnesia and wiped clean 20 years of computer/ software knowledge.

All you have demonstrated to us is as you yourself said, an ability to be ..

deliberately provocative

Your comments about ………

documentation support ….The fact that this has been allowed to exist for over 5 years I find quite incredible.

This shows your complete lack of knowledge about PTE and even worse a negative attitude to learning about the programme and its history. As I stated earlier documentation did exist and I will send it to you !

We obviously do not purchase the same software products Leonard as I either find my new software arrives with a thick manual which sits gathering dust on the shelf , or a flimsy piece of paper or even none at all. I am sorry but documentation in my world means hard copy - solid manuals not pdf files and my bookshelves are full of unopened copies of these manuals.

So stop playing silly games, you are too long in the tooth to revert or pretend to be to an inexperienced newbie!

All you have succeeded in doing is showing your own lack of common courtesy and good manners Leonard. Please stop wasting the time of the Forum members, they are prepared to help those who need it.

Hi Maureen,

Thanks, you have well and truly put me in my place. In my 'clumsy' way I was trying to help believe it or not.

I apologise to those of you that I may have offended or wasted their valuable time.

Personally, I will now withdraw from your Forum and from using P2E.

Thanks for offering me printed copies, but I think in the circumstances I wont be making use of them.

regards

leonard

Maureen,

You have done an admirable job of trying to help this "novice" out, but it is obvious he is not interested in either becoming more proficient in PTE, or helping others on the forum. When you made your initial offer, I was quite interested to see whether he would take you up on it, or whether he was just a "troll" and primarily interested in causing unrest. When push came to shove, it appears he decided to back off.

At least this one has had the "grace" to withdraw before stirring up any more controversy. B)

We welcome everyone Leonard and we are all human!

We make errors of judgement and because we are intelligent enough to realise our mistakes we learn from them.

This is one of the most welcoming and friendliest Forums in the World.

You are still very welcome :D and now you have as you say

no problem with P2E

surely it is time to relax and enjoy being creative with new work?

You may find in time you prefer the human contact to pdf files :D

Hope to see you soon at meetings in Bath :D:D:D

I promise not to bite !

Best wishes

Maureen

I think that pdf files can be a very good way of teaching folk how to do anything. I personally use pdf's in all of my video tutorials because I feel that the written word can be an excellent supplement to video learning.

I agree with Maureen though, the 'human' touch is a valuable method and also creates a more friendly approach to any problem. So, if you are still there Leonard, remember that we are all here to help if we can.

Whoa! Steady on, everybody!

I think everyone needs a little patience and understanding on this one.

Comments previously made by people like Ron, who say that for the price of the package, producing a manual for an ever-changing program is unreasonable, are spot-on. It is unreasonable.

Equally, it is very frustrating for a newcomer not to have help at their fingertips when they are trying out a new package. I know that the forum is brilliant and full of helpful people who generously devote their time to solving problems for others, but it is constantly overlooked that you may not have access to the internet at the time that you have the problem, and therefore cannot call on the forum to help you.

I made the point some time ago that all it needs is a more detailed 'Help' file built into PTE. Since then, this has been confirmed by Igor, and he said that it is on his 'to-do' list when he has the time!

So, as I say, let's all just be patient and be thankful for what we have got already.

I endorse the comments made about the value of face-to-face meetings. I've attended many in the past few years and always found people very welcoming, open and willing to share ideas and help. I would go so far as to say that, in my experience, AV workers are second-to-none in this.

The trouble Maureen has gone to in her messages is typical of the way people are willing to go a long way to help others. It's a pity that Leonard appears to be offended by the comments received here as there is so much good will and good sense available. Should he return, I'm sure he'll find a wealth of expertise and support from the many generous people who share their time and expertise freely within the forum.

Unfortunately, reading from a vdu cannot include the many body language and facial expression signals that are present in a face-to-face meeting.

So, to sum up and then shut up, find out where the meetings are and go out of your way to get there. It's not unreasonable to have to travel a decent distance to do so and it's worth the time and effort.

If people took the time to print out threads that pertain to a particular problem, or develop an index of urls to frequent questions [ my url faq is 1.3 mb +- zipped up] they would soon have a very good and current reference manual -- currently i have 2 3 ring binders and 2 clipboards on the go + i do not hesitate to save threads to hard drive filed in members designated folders.

we all agree that the help file etc is lacking but we keep plugging away -- Igor and crew are trying their best to satisfy all, planning ahead - vista ready-- trying to get hdwe mfg's to correct drivers and to do " geez it would be nice if you could do this Igor-- hint hint"

If you look back at Leonard's postings since he joined you will see that we have bent over backwards to help him but he always had an excuse why the answers did not meet his needs

Hi all,

At the risk of repeating myself (not for the first time)....

Why can't the excellent links provided by Maureen above be PINNED to the top of this forum so that they are available to all newcomers ALL of the time? Additional updated tutorials can be added as and when available.

That is the way things are done at other forums and it works really well.

I have suggested this a number of times but never got an answer (to the best of my knowledge).

Could I make a direct request to the moderator here to answer this question and perhaps clear it up once and for all.

"Is there any reason why the links such as those provided by Maureen cannot be PINNED to the top of this forum for all to have access at all times?"

If you need examples of this sort of practice I will gladly provide them.

Best wishes to all, including Leonard,

DaveG.
