gourmetphoto Posted July 25, 2003 Author Report Share Posted July 25, 2003 I guess basically I'm just trying to find a system that makes quality slideshows!! (I own a portrait studio). Because my files are so large, I need to make them smaller so pics to exe works better without loosing quality on my images.Honestly....i'm just plain out having a hard time with pics to exe. I wish I could get my hands on a decent manual that will explain everything well. I feel like I'm wasting a lot of time trying to learn how to produce high end slideshows by trial & error with this program.Anyway, back to jpegs. I downloaded a free software called easy thumbnails. from www.fookes.com Its ok but I had a few images that turned out with really poor quality.I guess I just need to keep testing until I get it right. alrobin Posted July 25, 2003 Report Share Posted July 25, 2003 Since you are in the professional portrait photo business, you will be looking for quality in the compressed photos as well. I would venture to suggest that only a professional program like Photoshop, Photopaint, etc., will give you the quality you are looking for as they use very sophisticated algorithms for interpolating, etc., in order to change image sizes, and to compress the resulting images even further for use in PTE. You have suggested that Ulead SmartSaver Pro v3.0 is at the top. I found a good article about this software from 3 years ago when SSPv3 was released, and little more since that time:Click for July 12, 2000 article found at "CreativePro.com" Notably this quote tells about separate quality and chroma compression controls: If you are saving JPEG images instead, you can take advantage of separate compression controls for quality and chroma. Sounds like a good editor, though, and the price ($80) is right.Edited: Adobe's "Photoshop Elements" is also a bargain, but without some of the features, apparently. I guess SmartSaver is just a photo editor, whereas Photo Impact also has some "slice and dice" web-authoring capabilities similar to Adobe's "Image Ready". SmartSaver Pro (not mentioned in that article) is in a different class, specifically aimed at Web's tight needs in terms of file size and web versatility.So the big question is this: Does PhotoImpact have the same compression engine as SmartSaver Pro under the hood???For someone with no decent Photoshop-class tool, PhotoImpact is a good consideration. alrobin Posted July 28, 2003 Report Share Posted July 28, 2003 Yes, I suspect "PhotoImpact" is easier to master than ImageReady, but ImageReady has some pretty awesome capabilities, especially when used as a plug-in with Photoshop.I created a map of Canada on my web site with ImageReady which would have been difficult with just Front Page and Photoshop to work with. You can see it HERE if you're interested. As you probably know, Photoshop 7 has ImageReady bundled in with it. (I think PS 6 had it too.)
