Greyscale Mode

Hi xahu34,

I'm not sure why you have posted this as you haven't asked any question or stated an opinion in your post. Are you concerned that the PTE version appears distorted vertically? Most probably you have set options for the image to fill the screen irrespective of the screen's aspect ratio or you have inadvertently set the zoom parameters to something other than 100% on each axis.

Hello fh1850,

actually I did not change any parameter. If you look at the uploaded file closely, you will notice that PTE shows the same image 3 times at a changed ratio. When you replace the water liles image by a version which is an ordinary RGB-image with 3 identical channels, anything is ok again. I just want to indicate that PTE seems to have problems with 1-channel greyscale images, which you obtain via the Photoshop greyscale function.

Kind regards

A quick workaround would be to convert the image back to RGB after you have grey-scaled it.

It would be ever so helpful if you could tell us which version of PTE you are using.

Hello,

let us finish the discussion. Just regard my contribution as I meant it to be: a warning to be careful with 1-channel images, and as an indication of a possible bug.

Hello,

sorry, but let me quote the text that I added to the images inside my attachment:

"Greyscale version of the well-known water liles image which comes with Windows XP in IrfanView and in PTE 5.1. This image has only one channel, generated as follows: Photoshop > image > mode > greyscale".

If there is anybody who does not like my style of writing which may be old-fashioned and may not have an American touch, I could offer him to communicate in German;-)

The reason I asked is that I can't reproduce this problem. I've converted to greyscale with Photoshop CS and Photoshop 7 and both produce normal images in PTE 5.1.

Best regards,

Lin

Although the effect seen by xahu34 is very similar to that which I observed using v5.03 (and which Igor fixed in v5.04) I can confirm that v5.1 does have this particular bug fix included. I've just re-run on v5.1 the tests that I did on v5.03 using exactly the same image files. I cannot reproduce that original problem.

Hello,

today I am in lack of arguments. I checked the time when I generated my attachment and when I uninstalled version 5.0. So it must have been version 5.1 which produced the corrupt image. Today, I reinstalled 5.0, and both versions, 5.0 and 5.1 do not show any problem. Thus, I cannot reproduce the shown effect on my own machine. Sorry for producing a storm in a glass of water (or a cup of tea, as you may say). A strange feeling still remains.

Kind regards,

Hi xahu34,

I worked for over 25 years as a computer technical specialist and I never did fully understand them. They are supposed to work totally logically but sometimes they seem to take on a life of their own and adopt a behaviour that defies all logic.

Peter,

How right you are ~ I having been in this Business + your 25 years ~ and I have never met

a 'fault-free' Computer. Like me I am sure you often wonder if the "Thing" is going to boot-up

properly each morning when we switch it on ~ or is it going to be one of "%$#@" those days ??

Brian.
