Some images taken in Cumbria last autumn and last week.

Hi Jim

A very pleasant and calm visit !

As Ken, great colors and sceneries !

May I make a few remarks ?

- your background seems not to be a pure black color

- the sheeps at the beginning should look in the opposite side

- your slideshow is not synchronized with the music... what a shame !

- the word end is not useful

- the slideshow ends very very abruptly

Anyway, I find your sequence very nice and I will look back on the way you choosed to divide your screen.

A very interesting place.

Thank you for sharing

Patrick

Jim

A very nice sequence to watch, very relaxing, particulalry if you know the area as it takes me back there. In fact I might pay a visit in a couple of weeks when we are up in Durham.

I liked the presentaion and it made me think of the postcards we see in the stores around Cumbria with 3-4 pictures on them. The gentle changes worked well for me. I like this form of presentation, because it adds something different to our shows, but seems to retain the charm that some other presentation methods do not.

The shapes fitted my 1280*1024 screen pretty well too, which makes me feel it was made for this resolution. When the 4 oblongs appeared two thirds the way through, they were slightly bigger than the preceeding images and I wonder if that was intentional. Perhaps you have forgotton to check the box in the Objects and Animation screen. Mode > Original and my screen is displaying those few images slightly larger than the rest?

Music is well suited and the pace worked well too. Loved to see 42085 again, I have taken a few photos of that Locomotive in my time. I think there are 2-3 shots that need to come out of your show. I emphasise that this is a personal opinion, (don't wan't to upset anyone else) One is close to the start and is not as sharp as the others, its of a running stream and I didn't think the musem shot of the minor worked that well. Its only an opinion of course, but I didn't think it fitted in with the rest of the images very well. I think you will spot the few images that need replacing yourself as it happens to all of us who put these sequences together. What we think is a great idea on Monday, doesn't look so good a few days later and I am always tweaking bits here and there.

I felt the saturation of one or two images may have been a little high, but perhaps it was enhanced a little between two different monitors. Again, its only a personal view. I tend to saturate parts of an image to lift appeal and leave other parts alone.

A really nice slide show from a great part of the world, your sure got around.

Jim,

Thanks for that. I know much of the area covered and your show makes me want to get back there ASAP. I also liked the presentation method - something I have dabbled with in the past but not as yet taken it to a conclusion. Your show has given me the inspiration to have another go.

I have to say that I don't agree with some of the points that Patrick has raised (sorry Patrick!)

The background looked black on my monitor (and if it is not - so what!)

Perhaps your not talking to the sheep politely enough (you can only photograph what is reality)

I was not aware of any music synchronization problems but then that may just be my lack of sensitivity.

Regarding the use of "THE END" - that seems to be an old AV convention that I fell foul of with my first show - but I still use it from time to time - just to upset people!

Well done.

Regards

John

Don't be sorry... I gave my impressions to Jim and not especially just to worry you.

The background looked black on my monitor (and if it is not - so what!)

... so what what ????

If so, if you don't see it, you have best to go to an ophthalmologist or tweak your monitor.

Moreover, if so, is it intentional or not ? accidental or not ? ... this can be an interesting point for the author.

Perhaps your not talking to the sheep politely enough (you can only photograph what is reality)

Perhaps I don't speek politely to sheeps, I don't know, but seemingly you feel relaxed when nasty.

The sheeps have there look instantly blocked by the image border... this is easy to change by a 180° rotation.

I am not a specialist of sheeps but, as I know, their side is not engraved on their body... but next time I will check.

I was not aware of any music synchronization problems but then that may just be my lack of sensitivity.

You where not aware of any music synchronisation ... but I was.... may just be my personal sensitivity level.

Is your lack of sensitivity the official standard level ?

Regarding the use of "THE END" - that seems to be an old AV convention that I fell foul of with my first show - but I still use it from time to time - just to upset people!

Why not ... everebody finds his pleasure were he can.

Funny to see that you restrict your comments about Cumbria just commenting my comments !

Now, if I have to comment comments about my comments, I will rapidly raise my english level

JIM

I have to apologyse if you too found my comments aggressive. That was not my intentions.

I make use of a telegraphic style as it is much more easy for me, lesser time consuming, more efficient and limpid..... and not to be impolite.

I find your slideshow very intersting for many reasons I told you and it is yet saved in my keeper repository.

Next time we go to the Highlands, instead of going from Kingston Upon Hill along the east coast, we will go on the opposite side and stay a few days in Cumbria.

Now, if each time I post something I have to use a magnifying glass to check each of my words and then reply to such very nice comments, then I think I have much better do as the majority of the forum members : download, download, take each tips and just pass my way ... never contributing.

Regards

Patrick

Patrick,

I unreservedly apologize.

It was not my intention to offend.

I simply do not agree with your comments and was trying to inject a degree of humor which I think perhaps as you imply has got lost in translation. I personally have benefited very recently from your input. I know everybody on the forum including myself holds you and your views in very high regard.

Also may I take this opportunity of apologizing to you Jim for "hijacking" your post and to anybody else who may have been offended by my remarks.

Regards

John

A very enjoyable show Jim, thanks, I will watch it again. I liked the presentation format and found the slow pace matched the images and the music well. Also the opening title was well done, regarding the closing I would prefer to see some credits on the music, photographer, production etc. rather than just The End. Maybe keep the panel format and put each in a separate panel.

I had the same thoughts as Barry on this.

I felt the saturation of one or two images may have been a little high

Again I agree with Barry, (twice in one post this must be a first). I also felt many of the images were a little "grainy" there may have been a little noise introduced when the images had their colour saturation increased.

Patrick is right about the sheep. as a general rule It is always better to have your subject looking into the image area rather than looking out the border. The image can be rotated 180 degrees in photoshop in about 3 seconds and if you try it you will see the difference.

On my monitor, (calibrated with the spider pro), the background was not pure black, more of a dark charcoal gray. I assumed this was intentional and was not particularly concerned about it.

You have captured a beautiful part of the world very well Jim, thanks for sharing it with us.

Patrick, I always feel your comments are informative and I sometimes agree and sometimes disagree with them, but please keep them coming as they are always welcome and you make a large and important contribution to any discussion.

We should have our visa for Australia in July and so I might just look you up on that beer mate around Nov/Dec. What part of Australia are you, we will be settling in Brisbane.

By the way it wasn't your post that was hilarious, it was a combination of them all.

Its great fun to see peoples likes and dislikes and if you even need that saying "you can't please all of the people all of the time" demonstrated, all we have to to do is visit a photographic forum.

Jim, Thanks for sharing your show.I always enjoy watching other folks work.

I tend to agree with earlier comments, that some of the slides were a bit over saturated and there were a couple that should be removed.(I didn't like the museum shot)

But generally it was very good and was never boring.

Look forward to more.

All the Best

Neil

Hi Jim,

I too enjoyed this show. I liked the layout, the very gentle pace which matched the mood of the music and the fact that there was always something interesting on the screen. I would have liked to know where the music came from. I noticed the same size problem that Barry mentioned. The first set of images had a border around the outside of around 3/8 inch (9mm ish) and the second set were right up to the edge of my screen (1280 x 1024).

Did you sharpen each of these images individually? I ask because some seemed a little soft and I was not sure if some had been oversharpened or tor if the highlights were slightly overexposed in some of the images. Small points really given the overall impact which I thought was very good.

My wife and I will be visiting the area some time this year and I hope I can catch the mood as well as you have done.

Kind regards

Peter
