Curling effect

UPDATE : new version released. Same link

I released in september 2006 a first demo of a curling page effect.

When I watch it, I realized how powerful PTE is today !

Here is a completely new slideshow compared to my first version.

TheDom-Curl-Small.jpg

[ 1 minute and 30 seconds - 5.07 MB ]

Download it here.

This effect was completely impossible with previous version of PTE.

This effect was really brainteasers for me.

The slideshow is not finished yet (at the end the pile will be empty) and there are still small defects I plan to improve.

But here is the first version.

I took the pictures today. You can tell it was a rainy day... ;)

Hi TheDom,

As always, the quality of the photography and the level of detail are both excellent.

The idea of the curling page stack is good, but for me, the curling doesn't work.

I feel that the way that the page curls doesn't look natural or normal.

Maybe it's just me...........

Hi, Dom,

I commend you on your fine, rainy day photos. However, I agree with Wideangle: the curl is not natural. Here is the reason. Pages naturally curl so that the line along the tightest portion of the curl, parallel to the page plane, is straight, whereas this one is outwardly convex.

Your long-time fan, David

Thank you very much for comments (and Eric, for rating the slideshow).

I spend a lot of time with a real book to turn the pages and find a way to simulate this effect in PTE.

But after reading your posts, I agree that there is still something wrong with the curling effect but don't know what exactly.

frets3, I am not sure to understand what you mean.

If you have time, could you make a capture with an arrow to point out where is the problem because I would like to finish this effect.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Dom,

Here is a screen capture of your "page curl" effect. The blue line follows the contact of the upper page with the lower page. For a more natural look, this contact should be straight, rather than curved.

Best wishes, David

Thank you David.

I'm afraid... you're totally right.

I think I have to rebuilt the effect almost from scratch.

I will let you know.

Thanks again.

Hi, Dom,

You are welcome, but I'm sad that you must rebuild so much of the "page curl" effect. I am anticipating, as are your many other fans on this forum, the unveiling of your completed illusion.

Best wishes, David
