  1. I have been creating MAC versions of my slide shows in Windows XP pro for months now, with great success!

I create them by using the 'Create in Zip' option and then copy the resulting zip file over to my MAC desktop. Then a simple 'double click' extracts the zip file and the usual PTE exe logo appears. This then runs the slide show with a single click.

BUT, in Windows 8, this does not happen thus the slide show will not run :(/>/>/>/>

Are you creating the zip file in Win8 and then moving the zip to the mac?

I don't use Win8, but that should work.

What happens when you double-click the app?

  2. I personally dislike laptops for any photographic work. I find the screens too small and it's hard to determine the right tone and contrast on images being worked on. I appreciate that this is getting better as laptops get better too. I have demonstrated for years and always used a desktop for that. Working on the idea that I would have a PC projector, large prints, speakers, keyboard etc. The car was already full of kit so a desktop didn't add much more. Now in Australia I have moved to a laptop, but they are a pain in tha backside sometimes.

YOu can always plug the laptop into a desktop monitor. Best of both worlds.

Even when you get a really powerful one, they never seem to handle things as well as the same spec desktop. In theory (spec) my laptop should be better than my old PC that I use for making videos, but it isn't in practice. Pay attention to the keyboard of the laptop you buy. Some put those stupid keys down the left hand side to open things like a calculator, but as a demonstrator we are used to those bottom left keys being Shift and Control. I made a mistake when buying my laptop and I never paid attention to that. I am ALWAYS hitting those keys in error because the keyboard on the laptop is different to the desktop. It's something worth looking at before you buy.

If the specs are the same they should perform the same. If you're seeing a difference then something about them is not the same. The bit about different keyboards between laptop and desktop is a good one, but I solved that by not using a desktop anymore. I just plug the laptop into a big LCD display. One computer, and no more wondering which version is on which machine.

If you have another large keyboard that will USB into the laptop, think about using that, particulalry if that keyboard is a white one. The craze at present is for black keyboards, but as soon as the lights go down in the clubroom a black keyboard is impossible to see. I have an old white keyboard that I use, but they are hard to find in shops right now. An alternative is to get one of those USB lamps so at least you have a light on the keyboard for when you need it.

    Backlit keyboard.

Next laptop I buy will have as large as screen that is available or that I can aford to buy. I will also pay attention to the keyboard too. Take a USB stick to the store and ask to see a heavy PTE slide show running. I found that when I did that, some higher spec laptops didn't handle it very well. I was surprised at how badly some of them did given the spec and price

Try it on a MacBook Pro booted into Windows. You might be surprised.

  3. I was thinking about why a PC version works and a Mac doesn't when I recall a problem a while back where a slide show had an issue where the commentary was recorded in Camtasia, my usual method. It's the only thing I can think of, so I have run the commentary track through Audacity and replaced the old commentary track with the new one.

If you are patient enough to try again in a little while (The new file is uploading now) perhaps that may clear the log jam

a good thought but it still doesnt work. It doesnt even get far enough for photos or sound. It crashes when launching.

  4. If you shoot hand-held, the one piece of advice that I can give is to use lenses with VR when possible, and also a high shutter speed... 2X or 3 X the reciprocal of the focal length, not the 1/focal length of olden days!

1/fl works the same as always and with VR, you can do even slowr. Ive taken handheld at 1/8th, looks fantastic. I still use a tripod where I can though.

  5. I am a newbie to iPads. I have purchased an iPad 4. I have generated a video for the iPad using defaults in pte. Uploaded to dropbox and then transferred the zip file to ipad. I can not figure out how to go from here. Any suggestions?

zip file won't work. You need to make an mp4 movie.

Add the movie to itunes, then select the ipad from the device list button, then click the Movies tab and select your movie (and any other movies you want), then sync. Do the same for music, photos and apps.

Also pick Show Sidebar in the View menu. I dont know why they hid it.

To play any of the movies you copied, use the Video app that comes with the ipad.

  6. One thing I find a little confusing is how to switch between the MAC and vmWare - do you have a simple solution?

What do you mean switch? vmware is just another app. Click on the vmware icon in the dock to switch to it, or if you use Unity, click on the individual windows apps in the dock.

Or are you thinking of bootcamp, where you reboot into Windows?

  7. Greetings,

Back in September, I had posted a problem that, after I had updated my Adobe Flash, I could not play YouTube videos. I figured out that if I uninstalled the Version 11 and went back to Version 10, the problem disappeared.

However, today I was playing with the Drivesharp program, given out by USAA to improve your driving skills, and this program would freeze up while playing the video game. To make a long story short, the tech people at Drivesharp solved this problem.

He told me to update my Adobe Flash. He was familiar with my previous problem with playing YouTube videos with the latest Adobe Flash update, because he had had the same problem. I updated my Adobe Flash as he instructed and, of course, it cause the same problem...YouTube videos did not play. Then he said to go to the www.youtube.com/html5 site and click on the 'Join the HTML5 Trial' link, I think is what it said. It is a link at the bottom of a lot of text information on that page.

After I did this, the YouTube videos now work with the updated Adobe Flash. He said this will work with Firefox and Chrome, but not to do it with IE. Anyway, this was news to me and hope that this information will help anyone else with the Adobe Flash problem. My Firefox version now it 19.0 and the Adobe Flash version is 11.6.602.171.

    Gary

Youre using html5, not flash. You can remove flash entirely and it will still work. The reason it doesnt work with IE is because it has problems with html5.

But you definitely want to update flash to the latest flash or you are at risk. http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb13-04.html

  8. I think it would be nice so users would not have to upload 2 versions of slideshow. See Eric's ISP quota posting.

    Possible Solutions:

    1. Windows and Mac free player download that can play slideshow data file.

    2. Windows and Mac players with single data file in zip file.

    3. Windows and Mac applications that convert to other format.

I think I like solution 2 the best but maybe not possible.

Isnt #2 the same as #1 but combined into 1 zip?

anyway, dont forget about players for iphone, ipad, android, Windows phone, Windows rt and whatever else comes out in the future.

Also must consider slideshow creator not wanting format change.

why would the format need to change? just need an app for each platform.

  9. Definitely need some type of optional horizontal position for the iMac. I think it would work.

What about Lenovo's 27" table PC? Not tablet, but a table. Even runs on battery for when you want to take it with you.

Wacom has a 24 inch touchscreen device.

Ive use the cintiq. It's nice but expensive. Its not a touch screen. You have to use the wacom pens. its a tablet like the regular wacom tablets but built into a screen, which makes it super easy to draw and retouch with it.

I am glad that Igor has thought about PTE next gen. It sounds like we will continue to have the existing interface plus the ability to easily port the software to Macs and maybe even touchscreens. I wonder if he is using objective C or java? Maybe there is a cross compiler or p-code compiler like Unity.

whatever he's using he needs to finish it. I dont know anything about Unity but the web site looks like its just for games.

  10. My personal opinion is that today is a very transitional time for personal computers (desktops and conventional laptops). Mobile devices are rapidly redefining the personal computer. Mac sales are dropping while tablet sales are increasing. The processing power of these new quad core cpu + gpu devices are just as powerful as most desktop computers. Display resolution is even higher in some of the tablets. Panasonic had a demo 20 inch tablet at CES 2013.

Like it or not the conventional operating system is rapidly evolving into a cloud storage, app store, touch screen, multimedia device interface. Why would Apple continue to support 2 operating systems? I think Apple will soon merge their operating systems (iOS and OS X) into a one so developers can easily create one app that will run on all Apple devices. Microsoft is trying with their Windows 8 Metro interface.

I agree. ipads and Android are big sellers but Windows 8 is genius. A laptop that can double as a tablet is perfect. Best of both.

So I understand why Igor has waited on developing for the Mac platform. My prediction is touch screen retina macbook and iMac this year and merging of iOS and OS X by 2014. Maybe Apple will migrate from Intel to all ARM cpu architecture to make this happen. Intel has been trying to catch up with ARM performance and low power consumption for mobile devices.smile.gif

Microsoft is already switching to ARM with Windows RT. Im not sure about a touch imac though, Id hate to keep reaching for the screen.

  11. A few things.

I'm not at all worried about the 'existence' of the files in the future. I think that can be covered by approaches like the 123 rule. And, I accept that video throws up the same issues, although I'd have more confidence in the long term viability of an AVI file than a PTE file, because Wnsoft is such a niche product.

I am worried about the playability of the files. This is already an issue for me on my Macbook. It's an old one (I think OS X 10.5.8). The shows play but with the occasional glitches. I primarily work in a Windows environment, so it's no big deal. But this shows what could happen in the future.

I know I could save a copy of Windows, and the PTE software, and there would be 'emulation' options available for sure, but could there be hardware differences which make it impossible to successfully play the PTE files in the future. Especially video card differences -if PTE accesses the video card directly is it not very dependent on the video card hardware specification (I'm probably showing my ignorance here).

I'm not attempting here to exaggerate the risks, because I'd guess they're low enough, but I'm talking as someone who has spent very very considerable amounts of time over the past eight years making their work in this format. A small risk, but with huge (potentially catastrophic) consequences.

I long ago concluded that PTE was much better to use than say Premiere Pro which I also use for certain jobs. And I've never managed to get better output than what I see from the PTE executable, so I need no persuading there. My point is solely about the long term playability of work.

You're very wise to be worried and it won't take anywhere near 50 years. Things are starting to change now.

PTE shows wont play on Windows RT, iPads or Android tablets, other than by exporting a video. Tablets are the next big thing.

  12. All I'm saying is the honeymoon is over with the iphone/ipad. The hardware lead they had with retina displays and custom arm cpus is over. There is some serious competition and if Apple is smart they will bend over backwards to help developers and quit blacklisting apps because they compete with Apple's apps. If Apple's apps are so great they should welcome the competition.

They dont blacklist apps that compete with Apple's apps. There are a bunch of browsers, some of which are much better than Safari. There are a bunch of mail apps too. there are many, many camera apps. there are also other calculators, maps, weather, stock, contacts and calendar/todo apps, all of which duplicate what comes with it.

Android phones are good competition. Android tablets are not there yet. Look at that link, the ipad has 88% share! Android tablets have a long, long way to go.

The iOS PDF printer icon is gone in Save2PDF. Now you must use "Open with" which doesn't do everything the PDF printer was able to do. I don't know if they were using an undocumented API or iOS update removed the functionality. It worked great and now it's gone.

Apparently there was a change with ios 5 and it affected more than just that one app. Look at this thread in apple discussions:

this was the reply from Eurosmartz

Apple's latest release of iOS 5 has changed the way apps are able to interact with the device. This now means that the one of the printing features in this app for printing from other apps via the AirPrint method is no longer available. Apple's changes for iOS have removed this functionality for all apps - not just ours. All other printing options from other apps via this app are still available and you can still continue to use your existing printer(s).

I use Linux 40 hours/week as my desktop PC. Solid as a rock. I had high hopes for Windows 8 but the user should be able to select the default desktop and never be bothered by a tablet interface on a desktop PC.

Windows 8 is going to be interesting. I like the idea of having one system work on both tabets and regular computers since I'm tired of keeping things in sync with the ipad, but on the other hand, I've yet to hear anyone say they like Windows 8. That's not good.

  13. I have a few Apple devices. Presently 2 mac minis, 1 macbook pro, plus ipad 1 and ipad 3 tablets. Nice quality hardware, nice OS.

    That's a lot!

Apple is very protective of their app store. Sometimes my apps that work perfectly are downgraded by the developer under pressure by Apple to remove a feature. I had a great PDF printer (Save2PDF) that was removed.

For Mac or ios? Macs can print to PDF without any extra software.

If you mean iPad, it's still in the app store:

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/save2pdf-for-ipad/id399758218?mt=8

Tegra 3 quad core android tablets are going to very common by the end of 2012. I think already android smartphones have already passed the iphone (which I use every day). I also have a Kindle Fire. It works but I'm looking to upgrade to a tegra 3 tablet.

More common than they are now but they have a long way to go to match the ipad. Android tablets are not that great but Android phones are a different story. I like the bigger screens on Android phones. The ipad is going to have a huge market share for a while.

  14. Apple is very short sighted when it comes to application restrictions. This is one of many reasons developers are switching to Android instead of iOS. I would buy a new Android tablet today if the PTE player was ported to the platform. I am waiting for the Google Tegra 3 tablet that is supposed to be released at GoogleIO (I think).

Not that many are switching. 70% of new apps are for Apple and developers are making more money there.

    http://blog.flurry.com/bid/85911/App-Developers-Signal-Apple-Allegiance-Ahead-of-WWDC-and-Google-I-O

Running a comparison of revenue generated by top apps on both iOS and Android, Flurry calculates that the difference in revenue generated per active user is still 4 times greater on iOS than Android.  For every $1.00 a developer earns on iOS, he can expect to earn about $0.24 on Android.  These results mirror earlier findings from similar analysis Flurry conducted in Q4 of 2011 and Q1 of 2012.

At the end of the day, developers run businesses, and businesses seek out markets where revenue opportunities are highest and the cost of building and distributing is lowest.  In short, Android delivers less gain and more pain than iOS, which we believe is the key reason 7 out of every 10 apps built in the new economy are for iOS instead of Android.

  15. I must admit, that I do not like it either, dividing video files into groups like Apple or Windows. What shall poor Linux users do?

I also do not like silly questions like: Does this player run AVIs? The typical answer will be: Yes and NO.

A Player that runs a video file on a computer (Linux, Windows, or Apple) has to manage at least three tasks. I must be able to handle the video's container (or file) format (AVI, ASF (WMV), MP4, MKV, OGG, MOV, FLV, ...). But that's not all. Inside the container, there is a video part and an audio part. Both parts have their own compression formats (video: MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVC/H.264, VC-1 (WMV 3), WMV 2, Sorensen, ... ; audio: MP3, AAC, AC3, WMA, Vorbis, MPEG-2, ...). It is quite obvious that the player must have the appropriate decoding properties for audio and video, as well. So, it may happen that a player runs one AVI, but not an other one.

Some players rely on decoders that are installed on the system, others like VLC and also PTE do not. Some formats (container, video, and audio) have been developed by Mircosoft, some by Apple, others by other organizations. Nevertheless it is possible to run most of all the videos on all kinds of systems :)

    That's it exactly.

There are different file formats which can be used on any computer with apps that understand those formats. Some apps might come with the computer and others might need to be downloaded, like VLC.

There aren't 'Apple files' or 'Windows files'.

  16. Re: "Machete-Lite"

Well 'Johnny Last' as usual to criticise again ~ You go and tell Eric that because he say's it does not work,

and as we are at it, Machete are talking about MOV and Apple-Quicktime Video/Audio ????? Files mostly

over 4.Gb (In other versions) ~ Had you read their previous 'Help-Files' that was for future development.

Its now nice to see that they have reached limited success where others have failed miserably.

    So it does work now?

If I recollect correctly I introduced "Machete-Lite" to this Forum some time ago. I'm glad you agree it works

for you because its an excellent simple Program which does as 'claimed' and I do not introduce Software to

this Forum which does not work....

I'm not talking about Machete. I was talking about this: its like expecting Apple-Files to work in Windows ~ they wont !!

I asked what these Apple-Files are, because all of the files I've made on a Mac work fine in Windows and the other way too and not just movies.

  17. I have told you till I'm blue in the face that .mp4 is not suitable for Machete ~ It wont work in Machete !!

Then why do they say mp4 is supported in version 3.6? http://www.machetesoft.com/machete-version-history.html

For heavens sakes please read its Help File ~ its like expecting Apple-Files to work in Windows ~ they wont !!

    What is an 'Apple-File' ?

As someone who regularly moves files back and forth between Mac and PC, I'd really like to know what it is that shouldn't be working, because it all works quite well.

  18. At the moment I use a 'Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS' to enhance the sound quality on my Windows XP system and the sound produced by this is excellent.

I recently purchased an iMac 27" and the first thing I noticed was that the sound (although good) just did not match up to the Audigy2 system.

I am wondering if there is similar hardware available for the Mac? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

The builtin speakers aren't that great. Have you tried external speakers? the iMac has optical out as well as normal audio out.

If you want extra hardware, the Griffin iMic is cheap and works fairly well. It works on PCs too. The Apogee Duet is decent and the Echo AudioFire is also.

  19. I have created a slide show and used the option to 'Create exe for Mac' It seems to have created a folder with a number of files within it.

Being a newbie to the Mac computer,I am confused. How do you transfer the Mac EXE over to the Mac for playing?

Copy the folder of stuff to the Mac and it will see the folder as an app but that doesn't always work.

What does always work is create a zip file from PTE and unzip on the Mac.

  20. I am getting the impression that Parallels seems to be the ether option, or am I wrong?

Either one. I prefer VMware but Parallels works ok too.

In view of the comment made about Bootcamp not supporting XP I am in a state of confusion because I am just about to purchase an original instal disc (expensive). If I consider using parallels, will I have to get windows 7 instead?

You can run XP in VMware or Parallels, just not Bootcamp unless you get an older Mac.
