  1. Barry You make some good points most of which I agree with. I have always viewed this section of the forum as a public exhibition where anyone can post their work, and as with a real exhibition, unless the maker is present at the exhibition they will not get any feedback on their work from the viewers. Perhaps the norm here should be "All comments welcome positive and/or negative unless stated otherwise". and it should be part of the section heading. EDIT 10min later. If a poster does not welcome comment they simply add "no comments please" to their post. The current section heading does read "Announcements of new slideshows and discussions"
  2. Paul You should be eligible for a free upgrade to the current version of PTE v6 and the function you require works well with it. I suggest you download and install the upgrade. You can also keep your current version working on your PC if you wish.
  3. Everyone Several years ago when I was just a new-boy here there was a discussion, (for which I have searched and cannot find), on the topic of posting work here and if one should comment in any form at all. The generally decided, (as I understand it), was only if comments were asked for, and then only constructive criticism also only if asked for. We seem to have moved away somewhat from that position and perhaps all should keep it in mind when posting or adding comments in the future. Barry For my part your comments are always welcome, (weather I agree with them or not), as are everyones here on this forum. Eric Playing the man is never good form.
  4. Igor / Administrators Would it be worthwhile running a poll in a new thread here on the OS used and intended to be used in 6/12 months time by users. What you use now XP Vista 7-32bit 7-64bit others What you intend to use in 6 months XP Vista 7-32bit 7-64bit others.
  5. Daniel Thanks for posting your AV, I enjoyed it very much and the accompanying text pdf documents were very informative. Good photography and music. I agree with all the comment above about the portrait format images, well done.
  6. Jose I am also about to move to Windows 7 and a new PC due to hardware problems on my old system and want PTE to run without problems. There is another decision to make when doing this, 32 or 64 bit version of Windows 7. The computing world is moving in the 64bit direction very slowly but never the less it is moving in that direction, my crystal ball will not tell me how long it will be before the 32bit operating system is redundant but it will happen. So to "future proof" a new PC should we go to the 64bit version of Windows 7? Not to mention any performance benefit. Also which level of Windows 7, Home, Pro or Ultimate? Home has not got the XP emulator the other 2 have and this may be needed to run some older programs and may eliminate some problems with others. I too am interested in what others think on this subject.
  7. Andrew Very enjoyable AV and very well executed with an interesting idea. Contrary to what some may say the white boarders work well and the coloured backgrounds add to the overall presentation. Rules are meant to be broken. Choice of music was excellent. Can I ask what the font used in the 2 opening titles was?
  8. Ken Had a look at the video and all I can say is--- "I want one and I want it now!!!!" Wow very very nice!
  9. Just love this forum, the things that one learns!!!
  10. Andrew I feel for you and like many others here I thought your AV was of a high standard. Don't stop trying and competing as we learn by listening to the opinions of others, excepting or rejecting some and building on that in the future. Would it be worthwhile approaching the judges and quietly asking why your AV was not selected? There just may be a good reason and you may learn something for next time. Of course it may just be bad taste. A comment from the other side of the competition -- On the few times I have had the honer to be asked to judge a photography competition my opening remarks always include something like the following-- "........you have asked me to judge your competition and I welcome any criticism of my decision and would be happy to discuss this after the formal part of the night. However I am the judge tonight at your request and its my opinion/decision that, right or wrong, counts......" It may be a little blunt but it is a reminder has mostly been appreciated. The only way to really know if ones judging has been appreciated is if one is invited back to judge again. Keep trying Andrew.
  11. Dave I had taken it for granted, (a dangerous thing to do I know), that the multiple tracks would be saved intact in the .pte project file but as part of the .exe creation process would be mixed down to one audio file to keep the exe file size down. Seems to be the logical way to go to me.
  12. To following on from Kens point. In the state I live in Australia some years ago there was an issue with shop owners playing a radio quietly in the background in their shop, for their own or their customers benefit. It was deemed an infringement on the copyright of any music that might be played on the radio. The end result was the shop now needs to purchase a licence and pay an annual fee to do this. So in effect anyone cannot play a radio in public if the music can be heard by anyone other than the owner of the radio!!
  13. Good things come to those that wait!! Wonderful news regarding the audio adjustments area Igor. Looking forward to the beta, and a big thank-you. Now to be patient a little longer.
  14. Rick There are many methods to achieve this. It depends on the subjects in the image or the style of AV you are making or the audience you intend for the show or many other considerations. As others have said there is no one "best" method of doing this it is really up to you to decide. Some ideas can be gained from how others have successfully achieved this. You can use a Matt board effect, as an example see Barry's Cumbria AV from here-- http://www.beckhamdi...fdigslidesw.htm Or the techniques used by Mark Allen here-- http://www.markallen...eries/mono2.exe Or methods used in just 2 of many excellent French AVs here-- http://diapositif.ne...opic.php?t=2172 http://diapositif.ne...opic.php?t=2410 IMHO The most important consideration is to maintain the edge of your AV once it is established by the first image. Good luck. **EDIT 1Hr later** Upon checking I find my memory must be fading, (too much good Australian red wine perhaps), Barry Beckhams "Cumbria" no longer uses this technique even though the icon still shows it, (maybe it never did use this technique???). However "Winter" on the same page does. Have a look at it Rick, sorry for the misleading information. BTW Just noticed we share the same birthday, congratulations. LOL.
  15. Davy An improvement to an already very good AV, thanks.
  16. Cici We have been treated to some very good AVs here and on Beechbrook over the last few weeks and this is another one. Well done. The images taken at night, I found, were particularly good. The detail design in the light coloured roof was highlighted well against the darker background. I like design and lines in photography, architectural photography in particular and could look at it for hours. However for someone who thinks architecture is nothing special this AV may be a little long. Good choice of music also. You must have spent many hours photographing the wonderful subject, again well done and thanks.
  17. Davy Wonderful evocative AV. Images and music combine perfectly. This is what AVs are all about, some nice third images as well. Thanks.
  18. Welcome to the world of PTE A-Vs and the user forum Don, you will find lots of friendly help and advice here. Like you I had until recently been building my frames as layers in Photoshop but have now adopted a similar method to that described above by Dominic. This method also allows a zoom or pan to be applied to the image and the frame will remain static. There is a more detailed description of the use of frames in PTE in one of Barry Beckhams tutorials- "Creating and Applying Borders or Frames Part 1." found here -- http://www.beckhamdi...e6/pte6list.htm Hope this has been helpful.
  19. Had a similar problem with IE7. IE8 fixed the problem.
  20. Noel I agree with Ken keep the AV screen area constant through-out the show. It is still possible to use images of different sizers or portrait and landscape formats. There are a large number of techniques that can be used to achieve this, have a look at some of the AVs here or on other sites. If you want to use a frame on your images keep it constant and don't change frame types or go from frame to no frame and back. I have no objection to the use of frames if they are not intrusive and used creatively. Like your choice of music. Good luck with your AV Noel and remember "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
  21. At a recent meeting one of our members proudly distributed an AV which contained a full-HD video made with his new Canon 7D. The .exe file size was a huge 410Mg and contained 70sec of video, 2 minutes of images, (about 25 images), with a little pan on a few but no other effects and a mp3 music track. The AV was made with that other AV software that will remain nameless. Of the 7 people that took a copy home only 3 were able to run it without any problems on their equipment. Yes Lin you are so right!! Thanks for the link Ed it was very informative.
  22. Two days ago I had a similar problem on one of my PCs running Norton Internet Security. It detected during a background scan a number of PTE AV EXE files as containing a Backdoor.Trojan and quarantined them. Some of these EXEs I have had for 4-5 years, some were mine and some were in my "Excellent AVs by Others" folder. It found them on the PC HD and also on my external B/U drive. It was clearly a false positive as I have had Nortons on this PC, (in various versions), for many years and it has never detected a problem with these files until now. Before contacting Symantec I ran the program update, (not the definitions update), and it said there were 4 updates outstanding so I loaded them and the problem stopped. I then sent Symantec an email outlining my experience. The bottom line is I suspect there was a faulty definition update issued and automatically loaded that caused this problem which has now been corrected by Symantec, I HOPE. EDIT I don't know Symantec Endpoint Protection.
  23. I was going to give this one a miss but after reading your introduction I couldn't help myself, (I love being offended). Very entertaining AV, enjoyed it a lot. I have several versions of the wonderful song in my Xmas CD collection. marry Xmas to all, thanks. PS Sorry Davy I'm not offended you will have to try harder in the new year.
  24. I was replying at the same time as you Peter saying much the same thing, so I have deleted my ramblings as you have made the point well.
  25. Well Here We Go Again. I thought this discussion had been done and dusted with the user poll conducted sometime ago here after many long discussions on this subject. It gave a resounding 76% of users wanting Audio Adjustment facilities. (not sound editing there is a difference that some refuse to see), within PTE and 60% who definitely want it and wish it had exists for years! Igor responded by saying it would be in a near future upgrade and was a high priority feature. Like it or not it is a commercial imperative that Audio Adjustment facilities be added to PTE. Michels request is the latest in a long line of new/experenced users who find audio in PTE to be poorly handled. My own experience is that PTE continues to lose customers because the current audio handling in PTE is basic and not intuitive. We should be discussing how it can best be done and not rehashing old debates.
