That's excellent info Lin and my advice to Mike was to thoroughly research and make up his own mind. DG

Michel, I am going to make a couple of assumptions: Firstly that your 5:4 screen is 1280x1024. Secondly that your 16:9 screen is 1920x1080. You want to make a 5:4 show to fit the monitor with the largest height resolution i.e. 1920x1080. In project options set FULLSCREEN 5:4 - enter 1350x1080 and tick the Fixed size of slide in pixels. Insert/add your images and go to O&A. In "Size/Position in pixels of parent" click on Size and it will change the image from "Fit to Screen" to 100% of the resolution of the image i.e. your suggested 1000x1000. You will see that this does not allow much room for comment without either moving the image upwards (each time!) or dropping the 100% to 90%. My suggestion would be to make your images 950x950 or 900x900. The examples show (roughly) what you will see on each monitor - I don't have 1280x1024 or a 1920x1080. My monitors are 1920x1200 and 1280x800. DG

Mike, One thing that I would advise is that IF you decide to go with the NIKON D300 - PLEASE consider downloading Nikon NX2 60 day trial. The two go hand in glove, like M&S, Pinky and Perky. You won't regret it but it will cost about £100 extra after the 60 day trial. The money you save by not going for a D300s will more than cover it. DG

Mike, The Nikon D300 and the Sigma sd14 use totally different technologies. Research the Sigma THOROUGHLY before deciding. If, like me, the last thing you want in a DSLR is video, then the D300 (not 300s) is the way to go. DG

1400x1050. DaveG

Hi Malcolm, When talking about resolution and aspect ratio it is EXTREMELY important to get the figures right in your mind, otherwise mistakes can be made and accumulate. Your club's projector is (I'm willing to bet) 4:3 and 1400x1050. If you decide to do a 16:9 PTE show the resolution you would set would be 1920x1080. I think this issue is the most important one in AV these days and just thought that I would mention it. DaveG

[Freeware] Directory Printer / Replicator

I take it back Ken - it does what I want of it. It is not nearly as versatile as the Karen version but it is useable. DaveG -
[Freeware] Directory Printer / Replicator
davegee replied to davegee's topic in Equipment & Software
Thanks Ken, I'll check it out. At first glance I'm not happy about ANYTHING writing to my C drive without giving me the opportunity to save elsewhere. A lot of programmes do this and some are almost impossible to re-direct. I try not to use them if there is another alternative. The Karen version gives the option to save anywhere. DaveG -
I have been looking for a utility which will print an editable list of directories and folders on my Hard Drives. I found "Directory Printer" at: http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp I also found at the same address "Replicator" which will, automatically or manually, back up files from one folder or hard drive to another. I have been using these programmes and can recommend both. DaveG

Same/similar bug as the Signature problem? Linked to it in some way - multiple bugs? DaveG

Lin, I knew that I had made a mistake by giving an example such as the rotation thing! I realise that if one searches the forum that one will get the answers to everything, but these people don't do that! They need to be led by the hand by someone who can show them step by step. The FAQ section is the nearest thing to what they want and it is, I believe, the best thing to happen to this forum in a long time. It now needs to turn its attention to even more practical matters with contributions from a few more people. Anyway, I had no intention of "rubbishing" the idea of updating the manual. I just think that it is not as high a priority as a "How To Do Everything in PTE" manual. I won't labour the point. DaveG

With respect Jeff, what most people want is a "HOW TO" manual. Every Thursday night at club I get questioned, not about where a particular switch is etc, but HOW DO I USE IT? Your excellent first edition explained all of the controls in the animation tab but that doesn't tell the user how to rotate one object around another for example. These are the sort of questions I get - people can work out for themselves where everything is - it is another matter to actually put it into practice. Just my 2 pennyworth and IMHO etc etc etc. DaveG

Dave, I wrote a long piece only to find that because of a forum error I couldn't post and couldn't copy!! I am not going to do it all again but I'll precis it: Don't rely on others experiences. Do a test using "Save for the web" gradually decreasing quality and when you see a patch of clear blue sky in an image start to pixellate you know (roughly) the limits of your camera's images at a given resolution. Do the check at "ACTUAL PIXELS"! I use quality 10 but I could probably use between 6 and 8. 10 gives me a margin of error and I don't have to keep checking for pixellation. Barry can probably go further because of the size of his sensor - I did some tests in conversation with him some time ago and found that a 23M camera will allow greater compression than a 12M camera of the same make (NIKON) after resizing both to 1920x1080. 1920x1080 file sizes are: Quality 10= 1MB Quality 8= 660K Quality 6= 460K That's with MY camera - yours could be different. DaveG

Eric, I DID NOT - repeat - DID NOT - infer that your images were anything other than your own. My question was whether YOU had posted these images before. I would welcome an apology. I will not reply to any of your threads in future. It is not worth the hassle. Best wishes, DaveG

Hi Barry, ...and welcome to the wonderful world of HD slide shows. Your show runs perfectly on my laptop's 1280x800 monitor. I took particular notice of the Koala after having read Peter's post and there was no detectble Moire on two seperate passes. I will edit this post to include results on my 1920x1200 monitor. It does, indeed, prove that today's systems are capable of running shows with images straight out of the camera. Laptop details: Intel Core Duo T8100 2.1Ghz 4Gb Memory nVidia 8400GT Vista DaveG Edited to add that on my desktop m/c with attached 1920x1200 monitor the result is exactly the same. There was no moire or jumping on the Koala and the appearance of the animal's fur should be proof enough to anyone of the value of using all of the resolution available from your DSLR wherever possible.

HANG ON ERIC, Now I'm confused!! Your images are 4:3 and your laptop screen is 5:4 and yet you say that your show "fills the screen" and there is no "stretching blurring or pixleating"?? DaveG

Anyone tried to alter their signature lately? I am getting a message saying: [#10211] You may only use up to lines of text in your signature. I am trying to put in just one line of text.
-
So that rules out the resolution theory but presumably, you are using Firefox on both? DaveG
-
Lin, What screen res is the machine you are using for internet access? and does the wrapping work for you? DaveG
-
Ken, On this laptop's 1280x800 screen "Fast Reply" is right below "Add Reply". Are all of these problems to do with screen res? DaveG
-
Eric, On my 1280x800 laptop screen text wrapping works perfectly. I have just proved it here. (Firefox - latest version) - anyone NOT using Firefox? DaveG

Hi Eric, "I've checked the tractor slide & there is a fine white line on the LH side. However is is not as pronounced as on your ss" This is probably an indication that your monitor is not showing you the full 1024x768. Are you running larger native resolution monitor at 1024x768? That could also be an issue for you. DaveG
-
Hi Eric, Here's the slide with the white line on the LHS - it is possible that you can't see it because of your screen res. I have used the same slide to show you what the effect would be to us. DaveG
