  1. I afraid it does; it's a concept known as 'death of the author'. The moment anyone published any piece of work, the audience will always interpret it in their own way, and quite often not how the author intended it to be. It also explains why some authors ask for critique, and then get irate with the responses.
  2. "personally I very seldom watch shows where I don't have control Then you're missing out on some of the best shows posted and that is your loss, because really good ones don't come along that often." Barry, I think your making a big assumption that everyone sees the world as you do; they don't. Media engages people in different ways, and I have certainly enjoyed many images and AV show that are very emotionally powerful and or pick up on interesting interpretations and concepts that lie outside the constraints of pin sharp, ultra high quality camera club competition winning images. I have seen quite a number of AV shows that fit your 'really good' criteria, that to me are just decorative; while they are pretty and colourful, they don't really say anything.
  3. Brain Mount the mic on a stand or a spare tripod, and get this a close to your subject as possible. I plug the mic into the zoom H4n, there are plenty of mic extension cables around, I like the Fisual S-Flex as they tend not to tangle up, and are a good build and sound quality. If you make films, as I do, you can record with the on-board camera mic at the same to, to help synchronise in post processing. If you want to go one step further, get a splitter, and plug the mic into the Zoom and the camera.
  4. Paul, this site has some very good music that is very reasonably priced for none commercial use. http://www.audionetwork.com/
  5. Brian, decent sound recording is a whole new world where you will find a mind boggling amount of information out there in books, videos and people trying to flog you expensive microphones. I think Peter has covered this quite well. I use a Zoom H4n, they are a very versatile field recorder and should give you excellent sound quality. A basic principal is, an external mic is better and also get your mic as close to the subject as possible, this will eliminate a great deal of back ground noise. I use a RØDE VideoMic which are about half the price of the Shure SM58, which is more of an on stage performers mic. Use the rest of your money to buy some headphones, so you can listen in on what you are recording. I would also suggest that you plug some headphone into your Zoom H4n, set it to record, and go for a walk round with it. Its quite surprising what a mic will pick up, as opposed to what our ears filter out. Don't forget to record 10 to 20 seconds of silence, so you can remove and background noise post process. However I would go for a clean recording if possible.
  6. Great show there, certainly held my interest or the duration. Thanks for sharing it
  7. I really enjoyed this, monochrome images are, as you have successfully demonstrated very powerful. Thank you for posting it.
  8. Terry You have there a stunning collection of images, each one quite capable of saying something really interesting in its own right. I honesty have to say that you have done yourself a disservice using complicated animated transactions; its far too busy, hard to see and enjoy each picture, and I mean this in the most constructive way, too gimmicky. I am saying this because I believe that this has the potential to be a stunning slideshow. I think you should step back, look again and keep things simple; some very subtle panning and zooming would do the trick quite nicely. Thanks for sharing it with us.
  9. Delightful show there Barry, I am well impressed by the seamless video to picture transition; works really well. Bet your dead chuffed with that new camera.
  10. Don Great piece of work, you have some fantastic images there, and have categorised and presented them in a unique way. The whole show hangs together really well. Thanks for sharing it.
  11. Excellent sideshow, you have certainly captured the essence of this special historic place. The HDR photography works really well in old and disused building like these. Its an all too familiar story here in the UK too; we allow some of our most important heritage sites fall in the ruin because their original use is no longer required. Then when things have gone beyond the point of return, people start shouting, why didn’t ‘someone’ doing something about it. I am also in the process of trying to save an historic Victorian waterworks too, and have set up a website with some information. Sandfields Victorian Pumping Station While the laws around the preservation of historic places may be different in our respective countries, some of the principals I am using here, may also be useful you. Publicity is the key; building and monuments become invisible because of familiarity, so let people know what this is all about, what is going on, and what you are trying to do. Thanks again for sharing it with us and good luck!
  12. Hi Davy The Arts and Crafts or Craftsman style was developed as a way of retaliation to the mass produced product. The emphasis being on quality work hand made by skilled crafts people as a back to basics idealism. However the concept was almost a self defeating argument, in that not many people could afford to buy such items, the labour costs being just too high and put them out of the price range of the people the product was pitched at. Thank you for your comment, I agree, I think I have put too many slides in this presentation, Ill cut down on the next one. I do remember Barry Bucknell, and some of his finer moments; the flush door, the electric fire....
  13. It is, he was quite suprized to say the least. I thought the plane was quite noisey too, maybe the levels were too high. Davgee Thanks for your comments.
  14. Arts & Crafts Bookcase Overview & Build This is a piece of traditional furniture I made for my son in my workshop, its quite nice to see young people appreciating traditionally made furniture. Made for American White Oak and finished with a rubbed oil finish. 38MB download On Beechbrook Cottage here A big thanks to Bill for his time and patience today helping me through a few problems uploading it. Thoughts or comments welcome
  15. Da Campos Thanks for the link to that very interesting article, be it, the Italian language is not my native tongue. I really enjoys the link to the 1 in 8 million site, a superb way to record the past with pictures and narrative voiceover. I have a personal interest in oral history, and have in fact looked into the possibility of supporting oral accounts of people with P2E slideshows. I did an experimental P2E a couple of years ago, trying this concept out. It which worked quite well, but needs a better sound track, Ill have a look at posting it here. Grazie
  16. Great combination of video and still, and a great subject too, we done often see moles on the surface.
  17. I thought that was quite good, you have some very good images there. I quite like those low down shots, as a suggestion, you may want to have a think about doing some focus stacking, which I think would look quite effective on shots like that. I am very impressed with that opening title video, can you tell us a little more on how you produced it? Looking at some of the work posted on here with short video clips, I am tempted to have a go my self, and am just in the process of collecting some images form a project I am doing at the moment. Thanks again for sharing it with us.
  18. As an ‘Experiment’ I think you are on to something quite interesting here; I found this one absolutely fascinating. I really like this collection of high contrast back and white images, the subdued lighting and darkness suggesting there is far more happening than can be seen; the cold, wet and dark atmosphere really adds character and mystique to this show. It oozes a private meaning in relation to your photography, which we would call ‘punctum’, yet at the same time shows a very public ‘studium’; in other words amazing I thought the show length was bordering on almost too long, I say this because this as a concept, is far better fed in smaller doses; and should leave the viewer wanting more, thus preserving its mystique. What I think you should consider is using a tripod rather than a monopod, so that the movement is constrained to the subjects that actually move. I would also consider, where you have reversed and repeated a sequence, try using a series of sequential image instead, so thing all move in the same direction. The rain drops in the puddles was one example I was thinking of. This to me is an extremely powerful slideshow, and has the potential to say such a lot. It is easy to see the amount of effort you have put into its, and I think this shows quite clearly. I do like seeing things like this where people push aside the norm, and are not afraid to show it off. Thanks for sharing it.
  19. Well I think this is one stunning show, well thought through, everything fits together perfectly. Great work, thanks.
  20. Well you certainly have the knack of producing consistently good slideshows. A really great collection of vibrant, sharp and well composed images. What a great way to preserve your holiday memories. Thanks for sharing it.
  21. I have had at time similar problems with MediaFire too, so what I do now is right click the MediaFire download link, and do a save as Anyway, back to the original subject; an interesting concept after watching. Its quite good to listen to your views when evaluating images, maybe you should post this on your own site.
  22. Gilio Nice work, macro shots can be a pain, and they either look great, or not; these all look great. I did not care too much for the animated butterfly, was a bit like a Terry Gilliam cartoon, which can look great in the right context, but not so sure about its use in this sequence. I would say the show duration was spot on, I think this does work best for specialist subjects like this, and the choice of music also worked well too. All in all most enjoyable Thanks for posting it.
  23. Davy That as a full screen presentation, along with the music worked quite well. I would say that with anything that’s as abstract as this, keeping things short and sweet is the right way to go. I am assuming they are computer generated images, perhaps you could tell us a little more on how you did it and well as the title of the music track. Regards
  24. Davy Well that was unusual, and interesting; I quite like these shows where we push the boundaries out in to new places. I think that worked rather well, thanks for sharing it with us.
  25. My pleasure. There is a really interesting ships graveyard down at Purton in Gloucestershire, well worth a visit if your ever in the UK; you could come and enjoy our rain.
